WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Computer-security experts, including former government officials, urged the Bush administration on Tuesday to devote more effort to strengthening defenses against viruses, hackers and other online threats.

The Bush administration should spend more on computer-security research, share threat information with private-sector security vendors, and set up an emergency computer network that would remain functional during Internet blackouts, a computer-security trade group said.

The Homeland Security Department should also give more authority to the official who oversees cyber security, members of the Cyber Security Industry Alliance said.

The Homeland Security Department, which was not immediately available for comment, opposes such a move.

This is another prime example of the government wanting more control instead of asking the public sector (non government agencies) to help. I guess they don't trust any of us who want to help.

These people recommending such actions arent just anyone. Its the faceless government wanting to take our rights and information away.
Namely, Mr. Bush. I fully expect not to have access to internet within a year.

I guess Mr. Bush supporters will be trilled about taking the INTERNET out of the hands of the common people.

I guess we are getting to much "information" for Mr. Bush.

Religious groups can not allowed for the "common" people to learn to much about facts, I bet they will be trilled also

Dgtempe, that's a little extreme isn't it? This won't happen because it would affect the pockets of key contributers like AOL, Verizon and Earthlink. Their lobbyists would fight such a move. Now, will we see tighter controls, probably, and I agree.

This is the perfect opportunity for the administration to tackle spam as that has proven its capability of being used for malicious behavior like installing trojan horses -- behavior that is threatening to the security of the US. Let's tackle social threats like child pornography as well. In order to do that you must filter every packet entering the US as there are just as many if not more child porn sites outside of the US.

1. Tighter controls will require hardware and software solutions -- good for the technology sector.
   
2. Tighter controls over spam will reduce personnel and network workloads in corporate IT centers -- good for corporations.
   
3. Tighter controls might help reduce corporate espionage -- good for corporations -- it can't eliminate it because a person can make copies of a design and walk out the front door with photocopies though.
   
4. Tighter controls might help reduce threats to our children while online -- good for our families -- it won't replace the need for good parenting though.
   

I know lots of folks will disagree with me but I think tighter controls, if implemented properly can benefit everyone. IF is the million dollar question however.

I will disagree with you, nothing the government do is for the good of the people, they act in the name of the people, while taking away our civil liberties for our own good and that is what is being sold to the American citizen so far.

Net security is nothing more and nothing else than another way to control the information we get and to spy on the regular Joe like you and me.

But as long as is for the good of the nation and the "war on terror" they patriot act will make sure that we conform to anything the government do.

Titian, are you still a doubting Thomas? This gov would love nothing better than to take "information" away from us and pull the rug out from under us at all costs. IMO that this is coming down the pike soon, i guess we will have to see.
Everything (they say) is being done to deter terrorists. Right. This faceless thing we call "terrorism" is a front for the coming police state/dictatorship/Bush forever times ahead.

Think its extreme? I dont. Certain things must be in place (or out) in order for the transition to come to pass.

One more "terror" act in the USA and its all in place. When? i dont know.
I dont mind being "extreme"- plain language i call it as i see it.
