If you have a computer, just buy the pc version. If he wants to play just minecraft. You won't have to worry about xbl gold cards, or playstion plus monthly fees for free games. Just get minecraft on pc.

PS3 is better for his needs I think.... XBOX is about the the social interactions, breeds a lot of pretty nasty online playgrounds and brings out the worst in kids... Plus you have to pay for those kinds of interactions to top it all off... So if your kid wants just to be creative go with PS3, the online is free, Minecraft is there, other games suited for that age can be found and it has a lot of other functions if you want to mess around with it yourself.
