Ken Peters a Hamilton Spectator reporter has been fined $31,600 for refusing to reveal a source in a nursing home scandal. His paper is paying the fine, but what will this do in future cases? I hope it does not set a precedent and make it more difficult to get the news out if they are afraid to protect their sources!

HAMILTON - A Hamilton Spectator reporter has been fined $31,600 after being found guilty of contempt of court for refusing to reveal a source during testimony in a lawsuit.

The source in the story eventually came forward and identified himself, but Peters was still held in contempt. The conflict the reporters feel must be extreme, a choice whether to reveal the source or face charges. The ethnic battle must be a tough one, but I stand for any reporter protecting the rights of the people involved.

I was just checking that you meant ethical and not ethnic.

"Peters said he had promised his source that he would never reveal his identity."

Seems the man is as good as his word. Stuff the Courts.
