Suspect sought in Kentucky high school shooting; student injured

(CNN) -- Authorities are searching for a suspect after a shooting at a high school in Kentucky left one student injured, a spokeswoman said.
The shooting took place Tuesday afternoon at Fern Creek High School in Louisville. It was not immediately clear whether it happened inside or outside the school.
One student was transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries, said Jody Duncan, a spokeswoman for EMA-MetroSafe. She said that at least one suspect was being sought.
The shooting prompted a lockdown at the high school and at an area elementary school. School officials were in the process of connecting students with their parents, she said.

Information is just coming in and details are sparse.

There are reports of an active shooter still on premises.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A Kentucky high school was placed on lockdown Tuesday after one student was shot and injured, a police spokesperson says, according to CBS affiliate WLKY.

Louisville Metro Police Department spokeswoman Alicia Smiley told the station one student was shot at Fern Creek High School in Louisville and that the student's injuries were not life threatening.

WLKY reports police and other first responders have been in and out of the school and someone on a stretcher was loaded onto an ambulance.

Authorities received a call reporting shots fired at the school shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday.

No other information was immediately available.

Fern Creek High School was put on lockdown after a student was shot Tuesday.
The student is suffering from non-life-threatening injuries.
The student's parents have been notified.
If your student is a Fern Creek student, and you have not gotten a call from Metro Police, your child has not been injured.
Police are not releasing any information about the identity of the shooter.
Some teachers are being allowed to text family members and parents with information.
The shots fired report was called into police shortly after 1 p.m. and police were seen putting on flak jackets and carrying assault rifles.
Police are sending any parents who are arriving at the scene to Fern Creek Park, which is near the school.
Fern Creek High School was put on lockdown, as was Fern Creek Elementary next door, as a safety precaution.
Students are being slowly released at this time.

Happening MUCH too frequently... All this anti-gun rhetoric is just keeping guns at the forefront of the population's mind. We make guns the problem, not the sick and morbid media that normalizes these events.

Sounds like it might of been a beef between 2 students.

My thoughts go out to the student who was injured but I for one am just relieved noone was killed.

What happened to the days when you resolved a beef with a good old-fashioned fist fight?

I blame the media for a lot of this. The gullible young and mentally ill are too influenced by what they see on tv and the internet. Some kids shoot up a school - it gets covered 24/7, a movie gets made about it, books get written about it, and before you know it, someone else gets the bright idea to shoot up a school. More 24/7 coverage, and then someone shoots up a move theater -- it just goes on and on. I'm all for freedom of the press, but sometimes I wish we could put a muzzle on the 24/7 news coverage of nut bags going on shooting/killing sprees.

Because, you know for a fact that some nut case is going to behead someone they're mad at, and it won't necessarily have anything to do with ISIS. Just someone who saw all the media coverage, and got the bright idea it would be cool to do. It's gonna happen.

"If there were no guns our children would be safe!" Another situation that will be cited to justify more security and less rights.

Why do those kids have their hands on their heads? Is it to show they're unarmed? The photo proob4 posted looks like a prison camp.

When did "We're armed and quickly evacuating the students with medical personnel on hand."

Turn into "Hands up! Single file, shut up! *cocks gun* Move let's go move!" ?

But anyway, disturbing that kids have to go to school and face these incidents.

If anything people just get the idea put in their head subconsciously.
As soon as you start thinking of ways to get your revenge, the things you hear about all the time will be the first to pop in your head.
It's just like marketing, you put your brand everywhere so people see it all the time so when they start looking for the a product you make, your name pops in their head first

Are you serious???? At the time that these students were being led out of the school the shooter was still active. That tells me that any one of these kids could have been the shooter. If it were, and he was allowed to put his hands in his pockets, he could have gotten a few more shots in while being escorted out.

Why does EVERYTHING have to be about a police state?? Why is EVERYTHING that the police do wrong??? They handled this situation very well.


And just an FYI, my 7 year old daughter goes to school less than 10 miles from this high school. They did a fantastic job. Reality is knocking, maybe you should answer.

The whole "hands up! Single file!" Did seem a bit over the top to me, but at least the situation was brought under control and they have a suspect in custody.

I just can't get the evacuation procedure out of my head though. Why have the children have their hands up? No matter which way you look at it, it was totally unnecessary. If the shooter was still at large when they brought the kids out like that, all they did was give a lot of slow moving, open targets. If the suspect was already apprehended, all they did was add insult to injury, and instill more fear into the already terrified kids...

At any rate, I'm just happy the situation is somewhat resolved, without any fatalities

my thought exactly it would have been different if the shooter was is custody and they were marching kids around with there hands on there heads.

The shooter could have very well been in line ,blending in with the rest of the kids

Well, there you have it. With everything in perspective, the situation was handled extremely well, in my opinion. Procedure was followed, suspect caught, nothing demeaning done by the police.... A decent ending to a bad scenario. Just too bad all of this had to happen in the first place

I agree bottom line they had no idea who the shooter was. If the shooter was in that group of children and it was not handled that way more could have been injured. a reply to: newsoul

They asked the young adults to put their hands on their head for the safety of the officers, and school faculty, and young adults as well. They didn't have a suspect yet, so any one of those young adults could have been the shooter, and had a gun. They asked to put their hands on their head so police officers can easily see the young adults don't have a weapon in their hand, and also give them time to react if one of them happens to reach for a weapon.

I don't see the big deal, or why you people are like "OMG the kids have their hands on their heads like criminals!".

Sorry, but putting your hands on your head is not just for criminals. It's a very common safety procedure for non-criminals and criminals alike. The safety of the officers is key, otherwise, the officers are at risk getting shot, and then who will save them?

....Anyways, shooter in custody. Looks like it was a beef between two students (or a student and some guy around 15-16 years old that didn't attend said school).
