The Job Search

There comes a time in every man's life where he needs to support himself and his family with some monetary compensation. I'm past that. So, I sat down and searched every engine and every site where they post job classifieds. Craigslist is the best for me. I drafted a resume and edited it and edited it and edited it. I found a few hot jobs, tossing pizzas on the beach, flipping omelets in a casino, and so on. The moment of truth came, and I clicked send on a few job listings. But what now? The only priority for me is finding work. What do I do now? The endless wait. Staring at my phone, every now and then activating the screen just in case i suffered from temporary deafness. I've put in my applications for work and now what do I do? This. Created a thread just for those doing nothing except waiting for the call back...
So who's with me? Sitting out the endless job search and waiting?

Try networking and job fair's.
I pick up most of my employees from these types of circumstances.

I always found word of mouth and the go getter attitude much better approach then sifting through the 50,000 resumes I get for one job listing. Unless you put in exactly what I want to hear chances are I won't even see your resume out of sheer time constraints. Craigslist is small and local enough to still be good, though I've had some bad experiences on these sites before in other unrelated things.

Maybe move to Texas?

There are tons of jobs to be had, but the catch is they are all in the middle of nowhere. Agriculture and oil. It only took me 15 years to accept the isolationism, now I enjoy it.

Get your applications from local employers in the morning when the work shift starts, return the apps the next day same time. Then check back a couple times a week to see if there are any openings once again at the beginning of the morning shift. This shows you are able to be to a job on time and are willing to work, and if someone is late or called in sick you are there and willing to work.

Really?
In the uk we have to complete intensive training and pass a fitness test, and we're pulled in quite often by the leo's to prove we have all the docs etc.
The basic training costs about 2k so out of reach for most unemployed, and especialy when they've flooded the market with foreing drivers who work for peanuts.

It's the same here but if you are unemployed and go on food stamps they will pay for it through the WIA program. If the OP is interested in finding out quickest way to do that, they are free to PM me and I will give them instructions.

If the OP cannot or does not want to go that route, there are a few companies that sponsor training. They just require you work for them for a year or so.

Either way you can get it free here. Just takes a little planning and research. In this case, I'll give the OP a break if they are interested since I just recently went through that process to dig myself out of a financial hole.

Edit: Also my response was if you already have license. There is such a need for drivers that you don't even have to interview. You can get job immediately. Great sector to be in if you always want a guaranteed job.

Over here (uk) most driving jobs are grabbed by foreign drivers. They live half a dozen in one small flat so therefore can afford to work for minimum wage.

It doesn't pay very well but for someone single or without kids it's a quick way to get yourself out of a hole. Basically you get a free apartment(cab of truck) and a paycheck.

that should get you started looking around. Basically, anything in the West Texas/Eastern New Mexico area is dying for labor. You could literally step off the bus and start making $20/hr that day.

This is real conversation repeated at least a few times a month where I work. (one of the BIg Three Auto Makers in Detroit).

Nicely dressed person approaches me at a service window.

Q. "I'd like to see someone about hiring?"
A: Sorry...there is no one you can speak with.

Q. Well...can I get an application?
A: Im sorry, no. We dont give out or accept any applications.

Q. Well then...can I speak with someone in Human Resources then? (there is a sign for on-site employees only outside the door).
A: Im sorry...there is no H.R.

Q. Well, can I leave my resume?
A: Sorry, you cant leave a resume...we cant accept them.

Q.Ok (now very frustrated)...then I'd like the phone # for calling for an interview.
A: Sorry...they dont interview unless its for an opening somewhere.

Q. Ok...so how can I go about finding out what jobs they are hiring for?.
A: You'd have to go online.

Q. Great! Will it give me the name and number of the person I can direct it to?
A: No. Im sorry. You can only apply online by filling out an application and attaching your resume to it.

Q. Great! Then how will I get in touch?
A: You cant. They will contact you IF and WHEN they are hiring.

I see many looks of disappointment from college grads and familiy-men and women all dressed up, folder with resumes in it under their arm.

Now-a-days....folks arent prepared for this. Told to get schooling, look presentable, have refrerences and go fill out apps and leave resumes. Sadly...this is not how its done everywhere anymore.

Staffing cuts, closing of H.R. depts etc...have made it a "on-line" process, and one cant talk to a real live person. In the end...Im usually asked if there anyone...ANYONE...they can talk to at any of the sites, plants offices etc.

A: Im sorry...No. There isnt. You have to just file an online app and sometime, somewhere, for some place...they might pull your app out (but they go in order and youre one of thousands)...if they feel you might be interested! (Almost never happens that way either)

There are pages of help wanted here in Jackson WY. The only difficulty is housing though commuting is what a lot of people do here. Look at the classifieds for the Jackson Hole News&Guide. Sometimes ya gotta go where the jobs are instead of waiting for them to surface around you.
