Chinese hackers successfully attacked military contractors for 12 months

Chinese hacker accessed gold mine of data on F-22, F-35 and 32 U.S. military projects

U.S. military personnel were said to be mostly in the dark about the security breaches due to gaps in reporting requirements of its contractors, the report concluded, Reuters reported.

In June, Canadian mounties arrested a Chinese man who the FBI believes broke into Boeing and other military contractors in Europe. Su Bin, formerly of the Chinese aviation firm Lode Technologies, is accused of stealing sensitive data on the United States’ F-22 and F-35 fighter jets, as well as Boeing’s C-17 cargo plane.

A total of 32 projects are thought to have been compromised by the suspected Chinese hacker and his team, including 220MB relating to the F-22. The FBI believes 630,000 digital files relating to the C-17 cargo plane were stolen, amounting to 65GB.

It is just crazy.

They can't spend a few thousand on dedicated secure links that never cross over to the internet.

The Chinese will be flying their version of the F35 before the US does.

The Chinese will save years of development and billions of dollars and roll the latest tech of the production line

Heads should roll for this mess but as always this will be swept under the carpet but flight MH 370 is starting to make more sense now with the tech that was alleged to be on board

I think it's pretty cool that in 2003 command and conquer predicted the hacking aspect of China. That game has hacker units that get boosted by the internet center building. There's even black lotus the hero unit for the Chinese which is a super hacker. Anyone think they have more things from that game coming? Emp?

Hell, the game is not far off from current events just far far less violent and volatile than reality since this was a story told through a violent war strategy game. In the game China fights the middle Eastern terrorist group because they set off a meltdown at a nuclear plant in western China. So unless that happens seems like we'll be against the real life version of gla alone.

Even though China actually participated in the anti GLA military actions it won the whole affair in the game. The USA became isolationist and shunned from the world with Europe replacing NATO with Chinese partnership. In real life China isn't looking like it's gonna touch the middle East with a ten foot pole. Interesting to see how close the game seems to predict the world state with only discrepancy from gameplay needs and bring set slightly too early.

Could be true. Make it seem like they're stealing legit information, but have false info mixed in that does more harm than good... Like tricking them into building aircraft with certain vulnerabilities which we are prepared to exploit.

Yeah, not what I'm thinking.

Give them something to hunt for that's BS and looks legit. Waste countless hours and resources on it. We identify leaks, tie up people who should know better...

They aren't dumb enough to build a blatantly stupid prototype. China isn't going to build some super advanced super vulnerable airplane. They are smart.

Just a resource drain.

Let them think they've got something and get them focused on nothing while we fly our crazy ass new stuff around.

This is nothing new unfortunately. China loves to take the lazy route and buy or steal others tech then adapt it for their own purposes.

Whenever a new Chinese warplane appears, foreign observers claim it’s a ripoff of a U.S., Russian, European or Israeli design. They’re not always wrong. The PLA possesses unlicensed copies of Russia’s Su-27 and Su-30 fighters.

So chances are that any ground breaking tech they show off was stolen, which means that others already have it or possibly something even better, kept under more secure wraps.

Then again, sometimes I know governments actually let things out so the opposition spends time and money trying to make something that is unworkable...work. LOL

I don't know why people are so scared about China stealing tech. It is better to preserve technology than have it lost forever like what the US is doing. Hackers are good sometimes. I bet if the someone gives China advance space technology they would have it ready and faster than US trying to get people to pay for those tech. Greed destroy lives, seeing the way all those nuclear plants are extremely vulnerable and all these natural disaster happening. I don't really give a dam about hackers stealing technology as long as those good technology comes out for everybody to use before this whole world comes crashing down. It'll be fine.

Technically, it would be a race between who can build the better plane. It is just like giving two babies toys and see if they want it or share it.

The money China saved should be taken off our debt.

But using existing networks like the internet "saves money" on private lines, which is a hoot when you look at the spending costs of the projects themselves.

The designs included those for the advanced Patriot missile system, known as PAC-3; an Army system for shooting down ballistic missiles, known as the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD; and the Navy’s Aegis ballistic-missile defense system.

Also identified in the report are vital combat aircraft and ships, including the F/A-18 fighter jet, the V-22 Osprey, the Black Hawk helicopter and the Navy’s new Littoral Combat Ship, which is designed to patrol waters close to shore.

Yeah, old reply, but still, what a load of BS in that article. Even with the data they got, you don't go from zero to best fighter ever in one try. It might be better than some of our other aircraft, but it's no way superior to the F-22, or even the F-35.

Absolutely, and they did jump ahead about 20 years doing it. It's ridiculous that they get away with it over and over and over.
