Patric Stweart Speaks Out Against Domestic Violence

Here is his Amnesty International Speech:

Heather Skye - This was my question to Sir Patrick Stewart at Comicpalooza 2013. I wanted to thank Patrick Stewart for his speech at Amnesty International it personally help me put a name to the abuse, sexual abuse in my case, I had experienced in the past. He responded very passionately and the last thing I thought I would get at was a heartfelt hug.

And if that wasn't enough he also did this: TorontoSun Link

Patrick Stewart helped to make a young Star Trek fan's dreams come true by meeting with her at a convention earlier this month.

Dawn Garrigus, who suffers from mitochondrial disease, won the chance to attend the Dragon Con event in Georgia through the Make-A-Wish foundation, but there was another big surprise in store for her when she got there.

We need more actors with integrity such as this. It is a shame that there are too few honestly genuine people that try to help and it's a crime there are even fewer that become political leaders.

Hat's off to the Captain!

LOVE this thread, AB!!

It is incredibly refreshing to see, as you say, such integrity. Quality person, quality words, and quality deeds.
"Captain Picard" is one of my heroes in Real-Life too.

Thanks for sharing this - I would not have run across it otherwise.
peace,

Ah, the man with the worlds largest stockpile of fan-gifted earl gray. I believe his favorite is lapsang souchong though. I wonder if he still likes Beevis and Butthead.

I wish I could add more to this thread than to just say I agree. Words fail me at the moment, but the sentiment is there. A great actor and a first class human being.

In regards to the top half of your post, Patrick Stewart is a survivor of DA. His dad was the agressor and usually let it out at his wife, but Patrick knew even at a young age to come between them and shield her.

And by wife i mean Patrick's mom

From the interviews I've seen involving him he seems to be a refreshing positive voice. It is nice to see someone call out DA instead of automatically making excuses or blaming the victim.

Kudos for Patrick Stewart, may he continue to be a positive male voice. I don't know his position on other issues, I am simply expressing my opinion in regard to his comments on DA. Hopefully he was able to go through his life making changes instead of perpetuating the abuse he witnessed at such a young age.9/10 men from those households become abusers and the girls date/marry them. It is always a positive turn of events when someone is able to break the cycle. Takes a lot of work and strong willpower though.

Being a bit of an oldy I can honestly say I have noticed that. I can see why the guys continue the abuse, but why do the ladies seek out such people?

Just the cycle of abuse. You become what you witness growing up. If you grow up in a loving home with little abuse, you are that much likely to be loving and not abuse. Naturally, if a girl grows up seeing her father hitting her mother and the mother allowing it, that is the type of relationship that girl is learning that women belong in. The boys are learning that the way to be a "man" is to hit a woman and the girl is learning that the way to be a woman is to allow it and forgive.

We are a mirror of our childhood experiences, good or bad.
