'Meteorite' smashes into Nicaraguan capital

Nicaraguan authorities believe it was a piece of the small asteroid dubbed "2014 RC," which passed very close to Earth on Sunday and was estimated by astronomers to be about 20 meters big, or the size of a house.

Did not see this one coming. Guess if their was a field of these things we could someday see a city destroyed. If it was a sister or part f the other one Sunday this is scary!

If it is related to the one we have been hearing about for a couple of days i do wonder......how significant this would be to asteroid theory.

METEORITE SKEPTICISM: Reports are circulating of a meteorite strike in Nicaragua on Sunday, Sept. 7th. Because the timing coincides with the flyby of asteroid 2014 RC, some reporters have suggested a link. We are skeptical. The crater outside Managua looks more like it was dug by a backhoe than excavated by a high-energy meteoritic explosion. Also, no streak of light corresponding to a meteor was actually observed. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

a reply to: Dolby_X Well it does not look anything like a backhoe to me. I am not saying it could not have been dug up but it doesn't look anything like what a backhoe does. Looks pretty much like an impact crater to me though it could be a fake but not with a backhoe...

Yeah your link shows a fireball too. As well as this..

Who is to say there are not some related undetected trailing rocks coming our way?

cant tell im not expert on this subject but those at spaceweather can be credible the text only tell us it dont look like one.

If this were to be an attempt of a fake hole, how could it have possibly been dug out without ANYONE noticing? Wouldn't that seem a bit odd that no one would notice a machine of some sort digging a hole this size, or even people digging out by hand tools without having to place the dirt somewhere? Just a thought.

Or it could simply have been a buried land mine, artillery shell or other piece of ordinance that exploded.
In either case, there should be some fragments left remaining. If it were a hole that was escavated, there would be caterpillar tracks (the construction vehicle kind) everywhere. If it were a giant caterpillar or earthworm, there would also be crawl marks.

For it's size it did little damage must have been fairly light?

This is a great story but it does seem like something is missing from it. I cant put my finger on it.
