Bombs Explode Across Spain.

MADRID, Spain�Dec 6, 2004 ��At least four explosive devices detonated Monday around Spain after telephone warnings from callers claiming to speak on behalf of the armed Basque separatist group ETA, news report said.

A first caller said the devices were timed to explode at 1.30pm (11.30pm AEDT) in the northern cities of Avila, Valladolid, Leon and Santillana del Mar, the newspaper Gara said.

A second call came in 15 minutes later warning of explosives also placed in Malaga in the south, Alicante in the east and Ciudad Real in central Spain.

The Interior Ministry said the seven sites targeted - streets and plazas and a parking lot - had been evacuated and cordoned off.

This really sucks. I wonder if ETA are timing these attacks in relation to the proposed Iraq
election date.

ETA probably meant this wave of bombings to show French and Spanish authorities two things:
1)That the recent arrests on both sides of the borders didn't cripple the organization.
2)That ETA's willingness to lay down its weapons and talk is already over, mainly fuelled by the past prime minister, J.M. Aznar, saying that the Madrid bomb blasts were the work of ETA and the current government's complete lack of interest for "local realities".
As much as I do not approve the use of violent means to achieve one's own goals, I have to admit that the Spanish government has done the impossible over the past two hundred years or so to oppress the Basque people and push them towards rebellion. The few times when a peaceful solution seemed at hand, something tragic happened, something that pushed both sides toward armed confrontation once more. Whatever that was ETA's murders or the Spaniards' "ethnic cleansing", it matters not, since both are revolting acts.

Hindsight: 20/20....

Wowzers, would it be safe to presume that Jose' Anzar wasn't too far off when blamed the 3-11 railway bombings on the ETA?

Would it be safe to also presume that the actions of the Spanish Government after 3-11 (ie: withdrawal of troops from Iraq, etc.) has encouraged and emboldened ETA further?
