Ebola Outbreak: Time to Panic?

Aren't they wondering if the virus has mutated? The Congo region has different strains than the Zaire strain, so isn't it possible that it has already mutated?

On another thread an epidemiologist wrote that when a virus mutates it relinquishes something in order to survive and they felt that it relinquished some of its kill factor as the Zaire strain kills 60%, vs the 90% of other strains of Ebola.

I don't know that scientists aren't 100% sure this strain isn't a mutated strain or has gone through a mutation in order to survive.

It's creepy how even a virus has the will to live.

I have read something about that - but the evidence has been minimal, and nothing concrete. Only until they really start analyzing the viral code can they know if its a mutant variant of the original virus. It would appear from the kill rate that it might have mutated - but then again, conditions change environmentally from one region to another, which could account for the death percentage.

Very good points you brought up. I think we must press forward into the future until we can know the true events of our present.

Thanks for the response. I've been keeping my eye on the news from a multitude of sites. Funny how everyone reports something different. Who knows what to believe! I hadn't thought of the environmental changes and other variables that could affect the virus, very interesting.

It's my pleasure.

Viruses are affected by temperature - at times even a slight change can destabilize it. But also cleanliness of a region. Even something as simple as air-filters, and water filters can make a world of difference.

You are correct. We never know what to believe. Scientist one says panic, while scientist two says stay calm.

I tend to listen to the calmer people. Panic is something to do as a last resort. Anyone who induces panic either has an agenda, or is unstable mentally their selves. (in my humble opinion of course)

give it another week. if we don't see a big rise in confirmed cases by then we probably needn't panic. but if it helps, i would say panic a little 'til you feel a bit better

obviously if the confirmed cases skyrocket then it's panic stations all the way.

With regard to Africa then resources should be supplied BUT. The western world doesn't give a damn SO that's why there is a big issue there.......

Your basic supplies would run out (we're already experiencing a dearth of IV sterile saline, the only purported real 'treatment' for Ebola patients) including sterile gowns, gloves, and most certainly, adequate infection control isolation rooms.

All it need is one unaware ebola carrier which makes it through the border. The incubation time can cause a massive outbrake and spread. I do not belief the government will tell us ebola is able to get airborne or gained some other fast spread characteristics untill they can not deny it anymore.

I think it is obvious all the experts are down talking the riscs while the chance of an outbrake in europe or the US is very real and more likely than impossible to happen.

i'm not in america, but i'm not panic, only 'feel tired' of hearing these kind of news that are prob intended to scare the public.

imho, the true disease in this world is fear. highly contagious.
fear gave birth to a lot of nonsense like isis (or isil?), religious debates, doom prophecies, 'god wants your money every weekend', etc.
