After producing some facts, and doing some research and putting together something I was proud of, I went to publish and got a message saying I did not have permission to publish or some non-sense. ok I thought, I will try posting this in another forum. the "loading" screen I was looking at was a dead link. Could not go forward with my new thread. So I hit the back button to retrieve my work and findings so that I may move it to a forum that might get my story to your table for digestion, only to find that everything I wrote was gone! I can't put into words the anger I felt. so does anyone want to tell me why this happens? If I know then maybe I wont smash my laptop screen again after I replace this one!

I imagine you did not have permission to publish because you have not earned the the right to publish to that forum yet. In other words, you have not been active enough to be able to publish and start a debate. I have lurked on ATS for years, created an account last year, but have only started using it in the last week or so, so there is still some things I am learning. I do know you need to prove your worth to ATS in order to publish in certain forums...something I, and I am sure a lot agree with in order to help ensure trolls and shills can't overcome the system...although some would argue, and perhaps in due right, that this is already happening.

Your work did not stay on the system because ATS does not automatically save content...something you should actually applaud. This means, that even if you type something, and delete it, it is not saved on ATS servers. Google and Facebook are notorious for this. Yes, if you leave the page and hit the back button your content will be there, but it's on their server, meaining, even if you type something and change your mind and delete it, it's still on their server, saved, cataloged, and archived. Bottom line...anytime you leave a page where you spent a good amount of time and effort typing up something, you should select all and copy it over to notepad.

I agree with you, for this is knowledge is not new to me. However I think maybe there should be some kind of warning, or perhaps a validation of permissions before allowing to continue with a failed/doomed project. I will be more that happy to present the code for java script to check and verify that the user is defined as "worthy" of said forum threads.
Anyway is there anymore Forum topics that restrict like this? I have followed, written and read this site for about 2 or 3 years never to find anything like this prior to this thread.

Thanks for the feed back.

I am not positive or sure which ones require certain prerequisites; however, I think it has to do with how many posts you have. I don't think you should have been able to click on start thread...I wanted to start one in Posse Comitatus and I didn't even have the option to start a thread.

I do think it would be great and very useful if there was a description for each forum, what type of content is expected within them and any restrictions/prerequisites, if any, are needed to start threads within them.

Just an FYI

The new Debate Forum - Calling all Fighters

This thread provides an opportunity to call for Debates, suggest Debate topics and look for other Debaters. If you wish to start a Debate it must be approved either by a Moderator of this Forum by private message or approved in this thread. To participate in debates you also need "Fighter Status" which you can apply for in this thread or by sending a Super-Moderator a private message with the request "Can you please give me fighter status".

The Debate forum is one of the few forums you need permission to post. As for your lost work, the best advice I can offer anyone is this: Write your magnum opus in a Word program and save often. Truly, that's your safety net.

I cannot tell you how many times I've written extremely long e-mails/forum posts/whatever, spending upwards of 30 minutes editing, changing how I word things, putting love and care into what I'm writing. Then I click send/submit, watch as the internet lags, then claims there's a 404.

Then, like you, hit the back button, only to find it aaaaaaaalllllllllllll gone. lol

After that, all I can see/hear is........."RAAAAGE!!!"

p.s. Sounds better if you hear "Rage" like they used to say it in the old video game "Primal Rage". At least that's how my brain works. lol

For the love of all that is holy.... Save your work before you hit the reply button. I can't count the times this has happened or the times I have seen others post about it. Listen to those in the thread who tell you to save your work.

Save your work.
Save your work.

It will save you from a heart attack.

Your short post will never be eaten. It's always the really good, really long, really thought out posts that seem to disappear into the great void of nothingness.

Save your work.

Don't ever....compose your hard work IN the box if its important to you. All of us have been there before.

What you need to do from now on is to type it up on your computer FIRST...cut and paste it into the box...and SAVE your doc on your computer.

If it gets deleted for some reason...you still have it. You learned the hard way. Simple fix tho. Compose off-the-site.

Also, there are rules for members in the Terms and Conditions you agreed to. Maybe you didn't read them. Or you didn't have permission to post in a specific forum, or it was about a banned subject.

This is a private members only forum with rules. U2U a moderator.....
