I know you guys remember watson ( I refuse to capitalize). Where is he?

Just based on the information and the idea that a computer can out do a Human which is utterly insane and is only an acceptable reality to those who have limited their scope of reality and potential to that of a robot- What has he done???

I just watched a video that I'm sure you guys have peeped, "The robot takeover" that may not even be the original title. However, in the video they made a claim that 'watson's' job is to be " the best doctor in the world". If this is true and based off of simple logic he should have cured ALL diseases in a about a day's time once programmed with the task.

Do you guys agree?

(just my 2 cents below)

And for the record there a Human can never be replaced. Robots can not imagine, nor can they dream. Those are two very important tools. Robots will probably predict and calculate trillions of 'potential' scenarios driven by the sole idea of defeating us based on the idea that we are 'weaker', but they can not imagine or calculate a scenario where we would/could win because I believe they would 'think' it is impossible. Everything about us is anomalous in terms of nature, I don't think we could be out smarted, even by something we created.

You sound like Will Smith in I, robot haha. But I do agree with you for the most part. Robots and computers have a limited "mind". Humans on the other hand have nearly infinite potential. We take chances, but a robot or computer would only take the logical option.
S&F. I hope the star worked though because my work computer is weird. haha

Call me utterly insane but, computers have been out doing humans for a long time now. Current "robots" cannot imagine, or dream, but, what is imagination? What exactly is a dream? According to Wikipedia:

Imagination is the ability to form new images and sensations that are not perceived through senses such as sight, hearing, or other senses.

hhhmmm. Seems like Watson can already do these things.

Dreams are successions of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that occur involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep.

Again, if we further breakdown the key words, we quickly realize that Watson is the beginning of one of the greatest debates our species will have.

It saddens me every time I read definitive/negative opinions, such as "...we will never exceed the speed of light" to "...a computer can never out do a human"

The thread wasn't about my two cents.

It saddens me when people have a hard time realizing the infinite potential that lies within the depths of the human mind.
In my humble opinion science is incapable of quantifying the totality of the human experience.

I can tell you that more than half of the people here believe those definitions to be very limited. They are products of the babies of the human family = Western Society. If science is based off of observation, the majority of the worlds cultures speak adamantly about these particular subjects with much more depth and offering a more solid and accurate definition.

So, in a nutshell
Robots and people who believe they have the potential to out do humans are the product of people who have not had a chance to grasp the whole idea of the human experience. The blue pill people who needed to invent them in the first place lol. There is a whole universe "beyond what you can taste, touch, feel,....." and you have access to that. Science can not measure it therefore it doesn't exist right? Or is it possible that it lacks the instrumentation because it is built off of observation which is not "the entire story".

If watson can do those things and many more twice as fast. The real point of the thread is he should have solved the worlds issues in less than a year. For example we know how aids works, so he should be able to use that data to 'give birth' to a completely new idea/concept. He has the ability to analyze and diagnose people as well as offer 'treatments' not cures.

Current and future robots will not ever be able to dream because look at how you asked the question, with a hair of uncertainty. That single strand, the .1 left out of the 99.9 is the thread to an even bigger world that could never be properly understood, 'again'.

what is imagination? What exactly is a dream?

I imagine a robot would answer it the same way you did. With no feeling and completely ignoring the splendor of the human experience.

I hope that made sense.

Its late.

Dont be sad, computers will never out do humans, because computers are a human creation. Anything a computer accomplishes is by proxy.

Watson is a system of extremely complex and dynamic algorithms. I believe only good can come out of what IBM has created... as long as they are good stewards of the technology and use it to further human kind.

ETA: I know that is a bit naive of me to say that, but I think Watson and what the future holds could surpass financial incentive.

What saddens me is that we will invest in robots to match or surpass human intelligence, but fail to invest in humans to reach their fullest potential.

Ahh our beloved (dear) Watson!

Watson is remarkable because of its ability to answer questions in clear text. You can actually type "Watson, what happens when you break the sound barrier?" ...Within a fraction of a second you'll be granted a list of answers 48 pages long containing reasoning based from scientific, mathematical all the way to philosophical perspective and beyond

As mentioned above, the content comes from centuries of cataloged data. The problem is, we struggle to replicate the EXACT schema of the human mind. There are so many varieties of thinking in humanity that we rely on database libraries assembled over the years to come as close as we can to mirroring human thought as a whole; ultimately delivering answers to our questions.

Unfortunately, Watson can't grab a paintbrush and freely paint us a picture of Kate Winslet topless in Titanic. The best he can do is a copy. It would be nice if he knew what happened when we die.

We're humans, therefore when we can't accomplish something we try to make something that can. Its the basic fundamental of innovation

Completely, very well said.

I was looking for you to mention 'curiosity', but I think you covered it with "splendour of the human experience".

Ha just so typically human, to think we are something unique, special. if one thing humans are finite. Whereas computers have no bounds.

Humans are special. Each and every person is unique. We are temporary on this planet and that makes us way more special. Without our minds where would we be today? Did the robot/computer create us or did we create the robot/computer. Computers do have bounds, but the potential of the human mind is infinite.

Oh, I'm sad too
Unfortunately your premise is flawed

We have invested in providing all the resources humans need to reach their potential

And they said: 'Nah, thanks anyways, sounds like a lot of work' and went back to playing on their I-phones

to my shame, i did not know of this 'watson' and had to google.

for any similarly ignorant ATSers; en.wikipedia.org...(computer)

for me, i think artificial intelligence will forever be just that. artificial. it will follow differing paths of analysis and subsequently applied logic than a human brain. always.

But seriously
Looks like Watson will become a sales man :
"On June 3, 2014, three new Watson Ecosystem partners were chosen from more than 400 business concepts submitted by teams spanning 18 industries from 43 countries. "These bright and enterprising organizations have discovered innovative ways to apply Watson that can deliver demonstrable business benefits," said Steve Gold, vice president, IBM Watson Group. The winners are Majestyk Apps with their adaptive educational platform, FANG (Friendly Anthropomorphic Networked Genome); Red Ant with their retail sales trainer; and GenieMD with their medical recommendation service.[79]
On July 9, 2014, Genesys Telecommunications Laboratories announced plans to integrate Watson to improve their customer experience platform, citing the sheer volume of data to analyze is staggering"
