im confused, is OP exaggerating the capabilities of AC130 or just rah-rah-murica lets kill ISIS comedy time ?

i mean gunships are not supposed to operate if the enemy have big calibre AAA and MANPADS.. what do we know about ISIS anti air capability ? even in vietnam steel tiger operation , they only go at night and have to fly pretty high to avoid NVA's 40mm and 57mm calibre AAA , and when the NVA introduced Manpads and SAM onto the trail, all AC130 hauled ass..

i wonder if the modern AC130 still got rear and side scanner looking out for AAA/SAM..

how long can they get there ? where they be staying ? who going to pay the cost ? do UK have tanks anymore ? i heard the USMC have more battle tanks than UK nowadays.

why not let the iranian and the kurds and the iraqi all work together and clean house ? maybe then ISIS will be forced to return to their benefactor Saudi Arabia ?

They still have scanners and now very powerfull sensors that detect and track rocket launches and AAA. Computer controlled chaff and flare that fires at most probable times to disrupt missile guidance.

Modern AC-130 can fly and shoot at altitudes above current ranges of man launched AA missles like SA-7 and stinger due to being able to pressurize the aircraft, which you could not do with Vietnam era AC-130's.. They still fly at night with state of the art FLIR and ALLTV sensors to kill targets. It can actually see targets better at night than normal day time targeting.

Could one get shot down? Sure it could but if used properly it would be unlikely. If we cannot deploy AC-130 in this environment then they seriously should be retired. This is exactly the type operations they are designed for. They are not designed to take on major Army's with sophisticated air defense which ISIS is not. That's not to say ISIS could not get ahold of a sophisticated launcher not unlike Ukraine separatist have and shoot one down. You obviously need to do diligent intelligence on targets before sending an AC-130 in. It is an excellent recon platform that also can attack with 105 howitzer, 25mm gatling gun and 40 mm bofors cannon

It can circle a city under siege for hours picking off targets of opportunity at night of course. Send all we got and you could harass and intimidate ISIS while slowly destroying ALL their trucks, tanks, artillery, anything armored reducing them to basic thugs rather than an Army.

Even better add drones and A-10 support and they would just spend their time hiding and sleeping in the day cause they would fear the night.

AC-130 Video
Not sure if that video is legit or not but I can tell you that is exactly how it works and looks other than they are not showing you the FLIR and zoom images in that video which have better resolution. This looks like the ALLTV to me, been a few years though =). They can do this for hours and then longer if a tanker is flying near by as they can refuel in the air.

the weapons you listed cannot be fired above certain altitude as the rounds will tumble .. even the 105 have max altitude limitation.. so the gunship itself my fly higher but the weapon itself wont be effective. unless gunships carry hellfires

Yes there are limitations of course but they can operate at altitudes that greatly reduce the likeliness of a manpad hit. I never once said AC-130 are invulnerable. They are a weapon of war and with that comes risk. May as well retire them if they are not usable. What would we use them on if not terrorists? Drug lords in Columbia?

Oh and the newest generation of Gunships will be using missiles not hellfire though as far as I know at this point. I think they are called greffin.

AC-130j Switch to missles

They also testing laser cannon for AC-130. You can google that one I got no time right now!

Currently in Iraq the US is using F-16 Falcons, F-15E Eagles, F/A-18C and E Hornets and drones with usually 500lb laser guided PGMs and missiles. Very accurate and powerful.

To avoid MANPADS and most AAA they stay above 15,000ft. Above 15,000ft the 20mm, 40mm and 105mm weapons on the AC-130 are ineffective.

I will just say newer munitions allow for a variety of range and altitude options for AC-130 crews. =).

WTF is going on in Syria i cant make heads nor tails!
You may be correct in your information on weaponry, i have no idea, but i think you may be wrong with regards to whom will be targeted with your AC-130's "running and dying tired".
Why would the US arm Syrian rebels then arm IS then target IS?
IS are now joining forces in Syria with the rebels forming a coalition against Assad whom the US wants out! So whom are the real targets in Syria?
Could it be possible that the good old US of A are going to play smoke and mirrors on the battle field?
IS is no threat to the west lets get one thing clear, the threat to the US is already within its borders.

I only support this idea if all the ordinance fired from the AC-130's contain chlorine trifluoride.

ONLY IF THEY CONTAIN CHLORINE TRIFLUORIDE!

If not, then I do not believe any aircraft identifiable to any particular nation should be used.

Not one Manned aircraft should be used in this campaign. If ISIS, want's to hide and remain faceless so be the reckoning they should face.

Drones, and cruise missiles.

I think your partially right. Our CIA helped some guys that ultimately joined ISIS. CIA did not create ISIS but did arm and fund some folks who ended up joining ISIS. Turn coats if you will.

US hitting ISIS + SOF not talking about deployments = you were right. Ok.

Except that they HAVE talked about gunship deployments in the past in high profile actions. The AC-130 is more high profile than an SOF team, so it's more talked about.
