I remember a book written about the Crusades set in the times during Baldwin the Leper King and Saladin. It was historical fiction, so you can take
this scenario with something of a grain of salt. However, the scenario was that a bunch of armored knights were captured by much Saracen light
cavalry. Then they were offered the choice - convert or die. However, it wasn't so simple. The manner of death was to stand fully armored in medieval
plate baking in the desert sun in full view of the oasis, nice shady tents, men not wearing armor drinking cool water ... One by one, the knights were
driven made by their thirst and the heat and broke proclaiming Islam. One by one they were immediately given plenty to drink and led away to
succor.
In the end, only two of the original number could stand to hold out until death.
It's very easy to say that you will not denounce your faith, but until you are truly tested ... how many of us can know for sure?
I could only hope that God would stand with me and help me hold firm.
