A Welsh resident with possible ebola is being monitored by health officials. Note the word POSSIBLE

Did a search and as normal nothing came up. This is breaking news on BBC radio as of early evening 5th August 2014.

I stress the word POSSIBLE. It seems the resident may have been exposed to the deadly Ebola virus while visiting western Africa recently and is voluntarily staying away from work and limiting contact with others.

Once again I stress that the person does not show any signs or symptoms of Ebola, and that it is his choice to limit contacts just in case.

There also seems to be no confirmation of the actual area of Wales, which is actually a large place.

It does go to show how this problem could so easily spread. Bit scarey.

Public Health Wales can confirm that an individual resident in Wales is currently staying away from work and limiting contact with other people voluntarily following possible exposure to Ebola while visiting Western Africa.

The individual does not have symptoms of Ebola and there are no cases of Ebola in Wales.

We are alert to the possibility of Ebola cases in the UK given the outbreak in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea and we remain vigilant to unexplained illness in people who have travelled from the area.
Processes have been developed to protect public health in the event that we are notified of any individual who may have been exposed to Ebola.

Would probably need to be a public sector worker if he is off for 21 days getting full sick pay, most private employees just get Statatory Sick Pay after 3 days, what is that these days £70-£80 per week or some similar miserable figure?
I'm self employed so it takes a severed limb or something for me to go sick...oh, and sometimes when I'm feeling lazy like yesterday and today.

Wish this had been posted this afternoon, I had to practically beg my doctor for a sick note earlier. Should have just said I was in West Africa last week..

In all seriousness I'm just north of Cardiff so will be keeping an eye on this, thanks OP. I hope the potential 'infectee' doesn't display any symptoms soon.

All my family are Swansea bay so from my place on the SW England coast, on our densly populated island, if it is in the community anywhere in the UK then it can be anywhere in a few hours drive.
I'm keeping optimistic that it is more media hype to either hide 'other' news, or just to sell airtime adverts, but if anyone was to see something in Wales or anywhere in the UK that the media aren't covering then it is good that we have such access to share information.

I imagine if 'the public' realise anything is ever confirmed bad/real it explodes on fakebook and twatter these days, and by then it is too late probably. That does not appear to have happened so far and I remain optimistic.

Ebola doesn't travel by magic death rays or fairy's.

It only spreads in Africa so well cause of the poor conditions and unsanitary practices they have over there.

Ebola is only spread via bodily fluids. So unless you like rolling in vomit and faeces your pretty much safe.

Only people at risk in the UK are those who travel to the at risk country's, our healthcare workers , airport staff and those with unusual fetishes.

There will be no pandemic apocalypse in the western world from Ebola. 90% of the British population will not die from Ebola.

No doom porn from me, I said I was optimistic twice in the post.
I don't think there will be any kind of pandemic style crisis and have never indicated that I do, anywhere.
Mucus, and saliva are bodily fluids as well, I hadn't actually thought of rolling in vomit or faeces but of course that would not be sensible.
No doom porn from me, just interested thoughts to invite and discover information from multiple sources that may or may not impact on any potential situation in my life. Perhaps you skim read the carefully chosen words in my post, as I personally cannot see where my message is of a sensational nature expressing doom porn?

Let's rephrase that to be totally correct...unless you like rolling in vomit or feces...or touch a sweaty doorknob...or get sneezed on...or shake the wrong hand...

"Bodily Fluids" is a slight misnomer, although it is exactly correct, the general public takes this phrase to mean 'internal' bodily fluids. Mostly because we have learned from the last virus out of Africa to cause a scare in the public (i.e. HIV), that that virus died when exposed to air, would not stay alive on surfaces, was killed by sweat and by saliva, and that is because it is very fragile and can infect only a certain type of blood cell. Other viruses (hepetitis for example) can stay alive in dried blood for a period of time but is not passed by other bodily fluids.

Ebola, on the other hand, infects ALL body cells, stays alive in dried blood, in sweat, mucus, and saliva, and can be spread easily by those typically 'external' bodily fluids.

That makes it more of a concern as the contact required to spread it is a LOT LESS than required to get infected by the typical 'bodily fluid transferred' virus.

SO it can be passed by casual contact, a handshake, or even a good sneeze, and even by grabbing a sweaty doorknob or sitting on a toilet seat.

Please learn that, just in case the 'doom porners' are actually on to something this time.

As another note, don't take comfort in the 'reported' number of cases. These areas it is spreading includes many remote villages that are not ev en being entered, many barricaded. People are secretly disposing of their dead family members, in fear that they will be taken to a quarantine location and get infected, or even that the health care professionals are intentionally infecting people. I would not be surprised if the true death tool is at least three times the reported numbers.
