I always get the impression that Tyson is a bit of a feel-good science guy, who is perfect to carry official messages because he has a great image as a fun, likable guy who isn't too nerdy or too far from average people.

But why wouldn't he be corruptible also?

Organic movement....you mean the way humans have farmed for thousands of years? Monsanto is evil just for the fact that they are suing farmers for using a seed that NEEDS increasing amounts of pesticides more than one year, contaminating other farmers crops with experimental seeds and causing farmers in India to commit suicide.

Any one else notice the possible "orb" at 27-28 seconds. Probably a lens flare, just strange that his eyes and voice change tone after.

Isn't he a TV show host?

Regardless, I'll take my food unmodified and not manipulated by companies such as Monsatan.

The 21st century has a new head priest of rhetoric and propaganda, an idol for the masses to worship and obey, hanging on his every word to proclaim to them with all due authority whatever the establishment wants the public to think. Just another puppet for the puppet masters. One dances in the white house, another in the ivory tower.

I was hoping he was talking off the cuff - but with the silk worm bit he obviously prepared for this question. Starting with "people do not understand" is mostly true - because if they did Monsanto would have already been taken down in the peoples court.
Maybe he simply doesn't belief that a whole section of science can possibly attempt such a travesty.
They have though
"Lastly, there is an urgent need to address biosecurity issues in relation to transgenic microorganisms; however, the group did not have time to address these specific issues in sufficient detail."
Stakeholder Workshop
“Future Directions & Research Priorities for the
USDA Biotechnology Risk Assessment Grants Program”
Washington, DC
June 9-10, 2003

Wonder if he bothered to actually look at the science, or simply planed to say something entertaining that belittled those of us for not trusting the anointed scientists that are here to care for us.
Using bacteria loaded with viruses, assisted by antibiotics, to transport novel genes into another organism and given to people to eat without adequate testing.

This is not okay to me - every step of this is not okay with me and certainly not the end product which I can't call soy because it is not. Saying the words substantial equivalence does not make it a food fit for eating, nor is it in anyway science.

Not happy

I feel the same way as Tyson-san...

However, I can look at nature as a complex, very high tech endeavor... and tinkering with a high tech device one doesn't fully understand can cause unforeseen problems.

And just to really throw a goober into the conversation.... anyone see the ghostly "orb" fly behind him at .26 sec from left to right?

The ghost of Sagan? He does get awfully animated right after that... possession?

Heh (sorry, amusing myself publicly... hopefully I won't get in trouble).

Genetically modifying crops for the common good and health and wellbeaing of all of humanity is one thing.

Genetically modifying crops to make profits, monopolise markets, monopolise seeds, and poison and impoverish humanity is something else altogether.

Capitalism and GM is like atomic bombs in the hands of tyrants.
