I haven't been to Mexico since 2005, but spent several nights in Old Mazatlan - at a darling hotel called La Siesta. It was one of the best vacations of my entire life.
Here's a vid about it (although it includes a lot of the Zona Dorada (Golden Zone) high-end resorts) -

There was NOTHING scary or threatening about that trip. I was with a Mexican National, and we stayed OUT of the heavily touristy area. Had a blast!

The border area is a rat's nest, a cesspool, whatever you want to call it, it's the absolute pits. I, for one, will never again enter Mexico.

I don't deny that Mexico is a dangerous, corrupt place, but if the problem were really this endemic, anyplace I drop my cursor in Google Street View I would not see unsupervised children playing outside, or women walking alone. That is not the case. In fact you are more likely to see unsupervised kids on Mexican streets than American ones.

However, the fact that pretty much everyone is inured to a corrupt culture is why we should be wary of letting so many come here. They don't cross the border and magically eschew corruption and crime.

This seem like more of a reason too put up a wall, not take one down. The cartels will follow if a strong board is not put up and all the people running here will be for nothing. The US people would just end up joining everyone that came over in a mass run to Canada, if we don't draw a line in the sand so to speak.

Actually it's more of a good reason to legalize and subsidize marijuana, since most of the power base comes from the sale of illegal drugs.

lol no need to subsidize. Just legalize and tax.
