First the image which is just 0.07mm across - smaller than the width of human hair.

Scientists have patented a new way to make ultra high-res displays that can bend and are thousandths of a mm thick.
They used a miniscule layer of a phase-change material, that flips between two chemical states when hit with current.
By sandwiching it between transparent electrodes, they made pixels just 300 nanometres across and produced images smaller than the width of human hair

None of the pictures move - yet - but the team has filed a patent because of the potential to develop a new generation of flexible, thin, high-resolution displays.
"The cool part about this is that the functional part is very thin," explained Prof Baskaran. "Because of that you could actually have displays that are non-intrusive, because you can keep the electronics far away."

This contrasts with current LCD displays, which require transistors immediately behind the screen to switch the colour of the pixels.

It's early days for the tech but the scientists say that in the near future this could lead to foldable TV screen and even smart contact lenses , Google glass is so last decade , as for 8k resolution with advent of nano pixels that's old before it's even arrived.
The team says it will be at least 5 years before we see any applications for the technology but if it lives up to it's potential we could be in for some interesting tech in the near future ....bring it on.

interesting , but will we be needing screens when the new quantum computers become commercial ? ide thought in five years time , 6.2 petra flops per sec would be enough to push projected interfaces and whole scenes into an environment making screens kinda redundant

This would be pretty badass. I've always wanted my phone to wrap around for my wrist like a watch.. I'm still waiting for any breaking news on holographic displays.

no need for breaking news , the pre seeds are already there, along with current tech the new computers will allow this and more..

imagine watching football from any angle even from the field live , within the field of play even , boggling, through any of the footballers eyes
how very Malkovich

Pretty interesting, Im currently working with a massive company to make curved glass touch screens for the casino industry. I dont think they have been put into the market yet, But they plan on switching out all the old machines for the new touch screens
