Larry's List

I cruise around a few websites on a daily basis, mostly left leaning as I've yet find any right leaning aggregate sites that have comphrehensive links to their sources for facts and statistics, one noteable exception is the Tenth Amendment Center at: duckduckgo.com... Some of the commentary is lacking sources but it's as close as I can find.

On Truthdig (www.truthdig.com...) they regularly run news Ideas picked up by Larry Gross of the USC Annenbergy School for Communitcation. The stories on his lists are alway provocative and well founded in fact.

It's a small thing but Larry Gross is an interesting man. He must be fairly old, I didn't check. He got a bachelor's in Psychology in '64 and his doctorate in social psychology in '68 (51 years ago now). In looking at his CV, it appears that his passion, and what he involves himself in largely, is Gay rights.

I wish he had a little broader set of interests.

Have you looked at Heritage or Cato? I find that they have lots of links and sources.

I've never seen his CV and didn't know he had rainbow interests and find it curiously that you choose to lead with that. Regardless, his position at USC did not come easy and USC is hardly a lefty school.

I have never noticed any 'rainbow' bias in Larry's List only a wide variety of well written pieces from a large range of sources.

The trouble with 'think tanks' right or left is their tendency to be self-referencial and I prefer commentary and analysis from authors that use a wide variety of independent sources. I like things written with some degree of academic rigor and even go so far as to reference conflicting points of view and facts.

The lead:

A meta-analysis of 343 previously peer-reviewed studies from all over the world has found that organic crops contain more antioxidants and fewer pesticides than their non-organic counterparts, according to reporting in the Guardian.

and goes on later in the article to state:

The study's findings run counter to those of the most recent comprehensive look at the same topic, which found, in 2012, "the published literature lacks strong evidence that organic foods are significantly more nutritious than conventional foods." That research synthesized the results of 223 studies.

Giving the reader the information he needs to come to their own conclusion based on their own "criteria".

In this case methodology is important as are the studies selected.

I don't find this open presentation in 'commentary' or 'research' from Cato or Heritage both openly biased.

That is why I follow Larry's List. He can be gayer then **** but he knows good journalism, good writing and the absolute importance of fact and source checking.

Dear FyreByrd,

I am so disappointed with myself for not writing more clearly. Let me explain.

I knew absolutely nothing about Dr. Gross, when I went looking the first page of the search engine gave me a link to his CV. That seemed to be a source where I could learn a little without the slightest possibility of anti-Gross bias.

The first page of his bio, included the things I listed. I found it a little odd that a man who had studied such a broad field as psychology would concentrate so heavily in one area. it didn't matter what the area was, it could have been hunting for as much as I cared.

It struck me as even more odd when he was the basis for selecting articles from such a wide variety of fields. That's all there was, that's all I said.

"Provacative demand?" he's joking. Sixty four years ago, when the UN created Israel, the phrase "Jewish State" appeared 25 times. Now, it's a "provocative demand?" That's good journalism? That's providing the reader with the information they need?

"Only for Jews?" That's silly. Non-Jews living there been offered Israeli citizenship.

According to Israel's Central Bureau of Statistics, the Arab population in 2013 was estimated at 1,658,000, representing 20.7% of the country's population. The majority of these identify themselves as Arab or Palestinian by nationality and Israeli by citizenship. Many have family ties to Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, as well as to Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon. Negev Bedouins and Druze tend to identify more as Israelis than other Arab citizens of Israel.

Most of the Arabs living in East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, occupied by Israel in the Six-Day War of 1967 and later annexed, were offered Israeli citizenship, but most have refused, not wanting to recognize Israel's claim to sovereignty. They became permanent residents instead. They have the right to apply for citizenship, are entitled to municipal services, and have municipal voting rights.

They're being treated much better than Jews in Muslim countries. If there are any left after being killed, forced out, or went running for their lives.

OK, Dr. Gross posts things that are not often seen. But to say that he's a journalist, uses scientific information, or presents the reader with the information they need, stretches the bounds of credulity well past the breaking point.

Go ahead and read it, that's fine, but don't believe you're getting anything even vaguely resembling balanced news.

Just as a last minute observation? The belief that the government is funding an evangelical "gravy train?" The story condemns the transfer of a million dollars to the Salvation Army, Some money to Uganda (where the article takes most of it's time), and stories of a million here, $800,000 there, etc. I would be surprised if the total reached $20 million.

For balance, why not point out that Planned Parenthood alone, got $540 Million in FY 2013, and that:

The National Institutes of Health has spent millions of dollars over the past decade to fund the construction of an HIV-prevention website that, among other sexually explicit features, includes a graphic image of homosexual sex and a Space Invaders-style interactive game that uses a penis-shaped blaster to shoot down gay epithets.

Sorry, if all you look at is Larry's List, you'll end up very poorly informed and having lots of false beliefs. - C -

There was a link to the story in Haaretz. I think you are perceiving his words as you wish them to be. He speaking of those that grew up in Isreal, in an environment of having to call it the "Jewish State" - a stardard propoganda tactic.

And I'll not talk further about the Isreali State as it seems to have hit a nerve.

I have followed this list for a while now and find him thoughtful (without being pushy about his own bias) and informative. I often look into subjects I don't normally consider. I respect the position he has attained without needing to justify it. I was taught that it's okay not to respect a man, but you must respect the position he holds - that's very old - very conservative thinking; however I have found it very useful in both my public and business life. In my personal life - I don't care what you do as long as you act with integrity to the very best of your ability.

Yes, I think you did, but again it may be my writing. I have no idea whether he's an anti-semite, I mentioned that he brought up things not normally seen elsewhere, I didn't cherry-pick I gave the entire listing on the first block of his credits, and it doesn't matter that he's Gay.

The objection I raised was that I thought his interests were narrow. If they are, then he's very knowledgeable in one area, and less so in others. We all "specialize" in one degree or another, my fear was that he might not be enough of a generalist.

He has indeed risen to some heights in his field, I congratulate him for his success. I have no criticism of his "integrity," he may be a very trustworthy person. I still maintain, however, that the articles he chooses to display are not balanced, nor are they complete. They don't have to be necessarily, witness Mr. Limbaugh.

ABSOLUTELY INDEED.

However, I think you are aware . . . hoping for reasonable dialogue about Israel is . . . almost always . . . particularly on ATS . . . a futile hope.

The enemy of our souls hates Israel with his most intense passion . . . it's his main way of kicking sand in God's eyes . . . to attack God's chosen priesthood nation. . . .

Israel persistently cares for Arabs within her borders far beyond any care that Christians or Jews get in most Arab/Muslim lands.

And, she even has soldiers and police risking THEIR LIVES to protect the life of a wounded ENEMY WHO'S JUST SHOT AT THEM or set off a bomb nearby.

That does NOT happen in the Arab lands . . . particularly in "Palestinian" lands.

Your writing as virtually always was way above average and quite perfectly fine.

As you know . . . not everyone hereon has great reading comprehension.

Some of the problems seems to be poor educational experiences.

A lot of it seems to be such perversely intense biases that their willful blindness precludes comprehending anything that challenges their tunnel vision.

Then laziness accounts for a lot of it . . . mental laziness . . . the electrical signals seem to be loping along the neurons at the pace of molasses in January.

I don't see a single thing you needed to apologize for to the most microscopic degree.
