Had a very similar thing happened to me in school in Oceana when they had an airshow going on.
It is pretty darn startlingly

In high school after class was out I'd watch the baseball team do their batting practice.
I thought it was cool that I could from a couple of hundred yards away see the batter hit the ball, then soon after heard the crack of the bat hitting the ball.
I guess the speed of sound is far better exceeded by this jet than a ball huh?
Neat stuff to see something totally without sound, then all of the sound rush.
