POLITICS: Gunfire Erupts During Powell Visit to Haiti, page 1

Minutes after Secretary of State Colin Powell arrived to hold talks with Prime Minister Gerard Latortue and President Boniface Alexandre at the palace in the run-down capital, gunfire erupted. It is not yet clear whether the gunfire was connected to Powell's visit or not. Speaking after the gunfire, Powell said that it was essential that UN increases the number of troops and that the UN troops have to forcefully take the rebels down, who still hold much of the country.

"They have to forcefully take on these armed individuals of the kind who were firing this morning," Powell said.

The mission has been criticized for being reluctant to intervene in the violence that has gripped Haiti since Aristide left. More than 200 people have been killed in the last three months in gang and political violence.

Looks like we have two situations of countries lacking order and U.S. is involved in both. While U.S. increased its troop deployment level in Iraq to record levels, U.S. has withdrawn its troops deployed in Haiti in favor of Brazilian led peace-keeping mission.
