The Oglala Sioux and Lakota Sioux of the reservation have been told by the Federal Government that the National Parks Service will be taking land that comprises the South Unit of the Badlands National Park as a new ‘Tribal National Park’, only the wording in the bill clearly indicates that it will be a federally managed national park under the Department of Interior, giving mere lip service to its tribal title. The Congressional bill has already been written, and if passed through Congress, both tribal members and non tribal members will be stripped of their deeded land – at a price set by the federal government. If owners do not accept Washington’s offer (expected to be a meager one), the land can be acquired at no cost because the measure has waived all appraisal rights and stipulates that Washington can simply take Indian land by force under ‘eminent domain’.

Thousands of tribe members will be affected by the land-grab. Some residents will be forced to relocate, and many more others will lose their income from grazing allotments on the land – a result which will ultimately force any remaining independent cattle ranchers out of business.

“There is a feeling of common cause between attached parties on this issue – namely tribes and other reservations. The bottom line is we’ll all be under dictatorial control if something is not done quick”.

Lies within lies. "National Parks" aren't set aside for posterity anymore. They are increasingly seen as untapped resources. Placing then under the department of "Interior" (read that dept of agriculture) is not only stealing it from Native Americans but the but the people as a whole.

National Parks are becoming Parks Incorporated.

Had the op did a search and read the thread he would have found out the Oglala Sioux themselves are drafting the legislation with the NPS to create this park. So there is no federal land grab nonsense going on like the person who wrote the article states.

This is the most outrageous thing I have heard out of the US for about a month, which places it pretty high on the scale of outrage.

The communities effected by this land grab are where they are because the US government set up reservations to confine the Native American peoples into manageable segments, making it easier to monitor and oppress them in the early years of the existence of those reservations. The people who live on these lands now, are descended from those who were displaced from the land they had lived on previously, only to be forced to live on sub par land, which in the main, was less conducive to the way of life that the native tribes had previously enjoyed.

This current land grab attempt is nothing short of adding insult to a long running, and inexcusable injury, and those who propose it, and those who vote for it, should be bloody ashamed of themselves. Thoughtless, insensitive, and unnecessary are just a few of the words that could be used to describe this ghastly state of affairs.

It is the Native Americans themselves that started this they want the park. There is no land grab going on here.

From what I have heard from a couple of Native American friends, when a tribe strikes a deal with the Feds, like a new casino, only a few tribal members usually cash in on such a project. So I'm assuming that is the case here, that a few connected tribal members will get anything from this and the rest of the tribe will only lose. I hope that that have a clause that would return the land to the tribe after the feds take what they wanted from it. After stealing most of the land and killing off most of the tribes, a mean spirited government would probably justify this by saying, "They ought to be used to it by now." while they laugh all the way to the bank.

Yep, this "Federal land grab" story has already been debunked. From the link in your post:

Of course, there are some ranchers currently on the land that will have to be displaced. It is those people who aren't too happy about it. But they are going to have to deal with the Oglala Sioux tribal council, as they are the ones making this whole thing happen.

The US government signed something like 500 treaties with the various Indian tribes/nations and broke EVERY SINGLE ONE.

Neither article you post named one Senator or Congressperson. So would you mind naming them? And what will their job be counting Buffalo? That is the main reason why the Oglala Sioux want this park to raise buffalo.
