I believe the reason you don't see movies leading to a "better world" so-to-speak (via revolution or otherwise) is because real world endeavors never lead to a utopia, unless of course it's a Disney fairy tale. There is nothing we can do as human beings that lead us to a better way of life. If anyone were to proclaim such a thing, they would probably be figuratively crucified. There are too many different opinions on what could lead us to a better way of life.... God.... religion... philosophy.... love.... technology... even Godlessness, take your pick. To say any one thing is the answer, would always be rejected, which is why it wouldn't make for a good movie

It's acceptable to be biased about certain aspects of acceptable societal perceptions, but when it comes to the unknown, making assumptions will get you thrown under the bus lol. There are plenty of movies about Armageddon, catastrophic scenarios, none of which ever lead to peace, but more of a "fill in the blank" ending. The TV show continuum is about corporations taking over and becoming the government (big brother) - you could loosely relate that to the archetype of the central banking system.

Whether we want to admit it or not, we can see (as a collective) the inevitable bondage of ourselves, but not our salvation. We don't make movies about it because we can't see it (as a collective). All we see is a bleak future. This is of course my opinion. I believe the collective mindset of humanity is that things are getting worse, not better and ..... sadly there's no way out. I believe our TV shows are getting more and more dark (as beezzer put it), because of that impending sensation of *giggles* "doom porn*. Real life doom porn.

The idea of predictive programming implies that doom and fatalism are working on the viewers subconscious to make bad stuff familiar and therefore "normal".

Popular music tends to be sentimental and sad, movies tend to be fatalistic like the masks of tragedy and comedy.

Commiseration is a lot more inclusive and a lot less demanding than personal achievement or personal exploration.

Thinking should be effortless, mandatory education makes thinking as uncomfortable as possible.

"the lesser people choose recreation that does not refresh or rejuvenate" Freidrich Neitzsche somewhere in The Story of Philosophy part II Emanuel Kant to the Modern Philosophers

I guess that's is the reason for Classical Music and Poetry.

Perusing science should be like exploring the rules of the universe and claiming any insights as discovered deserted islands, or finding Krom's sword.

I have anticipated this series since I read the book, by Tom Perotta. It's a bit of a thought experiment, asking "What would happen if a random 2% of the earth's population suddenly vanished?" It is not explicitly the rapture, nobody really knows why they disappeared, and what drives the story is what people do to try to make sense of it.

The series is more intense than the book, and has added additional characters and storylines, but is following the general direction of the book.

Tom Perotta sold the story to HBO before it was even published. It seems we are in a golden age of dystopian tales, and HBO is not one to ignore a trend.

The book had a sort of indeterminate ending, and this could possibly be because it was written to be a series. HBO's production values are always excellent, and this should be an interesting one to watch.

So far, seems like Damon L. is trying to catch lightning in a bottle again, like with LOST. Guess we'll see. I haven't been able to check it out yet, but it either is or will be on HBO OnDemand. Never miss my TrueBlood though, even if it jumped the shark ages ago.

Piqued my interest when I first heard about it. Seems to be another iteration of some common themes that keep occurring. Predictive programming as others mentioned is where I place my money. Have to prime the public for mass disappearances of course in my opinion "Aliens" will swoop in and say they snatched everyone up.

If you can keep you head I guess something about it is going to be in the real future.

Like when would be nice to know, I guess.

Or how to be in the two percent maybe.

OK Beez..I managed to catch the complete 1AM showing on HBO. It is depressing and dark. But, also like reading a good doom porn thread here.

I'm going to stick with this one. It has some good potential with the cast they have.

I'm not 100% hooked yet. It will take at least 2 more episodes to make me a true Left Overs junkie...

That was one very weird puppy!

Dark and dingy and nothing nice.

I think I prefer a little light, even just a tiny bit!

Been watching this since it started and at first I wasn't too sure about it. But at this point, I have to say I'm totally hooked.
