This happened 30 years ago but given the current discussions of sink holes and drilling, I thought some might find it interesting.

This was an engineering disaster by Texaco in Louisiana that destroyed a very old and productive salt mine and nature area. It's what can happen when a well being drilled hits a mine in a salt dome. The result is extreme.

Holy cow! Messed up that swimming hole. Water has no mercy.

There is also an entry on Wiki.

On November 20, 1980, a Texaco oil rig accidentally drilled into the Diamond Crystal Salt Company salt mine.

Water and gravity can do some pretty awesome stuff.
