There are Dear Ones from that time in country . . . Loved ones I don't reach out to often.

Occasionally I'll get a very cryptic reply.

Some were tortured for standing up for democracy etc. publicly.

It can still be dangerous to reply to overseas friends . . . very dangerous.

I suspect your friends would reply if they felt it was safe.

MORE were killed in the side streets leading to the square than in the square.

Certainly there's plenty of disinformation about.

However, I've read virtually every book on the topic I could find in English . . . including the massive one with the most research and first person reports.

The man stopping the tanks evidently escaped for at least many months if not several years. Beyond that, it's hard to say.

Certainly there were deaths in the square.

Certainly there were many deaths. How many is still very hard to calculate with any dependable reliability.

Some consider at a minimum 800 or so were killed. Some call that a maximum. Others say several thousand is a more accurate upper figure.

Certainly many Beijingers' extended families had one or more people they knew to be missing and/or dead after the event.

It was a very sobering honor to be in country and to have nationals affirm on their own initiative that if the government kept stirring up Anti-American feelings & blaming America, they would hide me to protect me--even though it risked their whole family.

THAT'S EXCEEDINGLY HUMBLING TO THE MAX!
