He probably gave it away because he realized those who find it are cursed.

Cool find...

I can't get a pic up for you something about the wrong image type.

But anyone else thinks he looks like a troll face?

LOLOL Yes!!

Ps, nice little find OP. I'd love to fish one of these up. But I don't go fishing. I guess we've all got to start somewhere

The movie Pompeii,
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje plays Atticus, an African gladiator
worshipping a figurine in his holding cell,
identical to the one found by fishermen...no joke..
I think it shows the figurine in 3 separate scenes,
And one of the scenes is a close up and the similarities are uncanny..

How to find that scene and post a pic, I do not have a clue...
Coincidence, maybe, maybe not.....

Haha, some of you guys are cracking me up!

Nice find though
it's funny how much we think is long gone but is just waiting to be found. Was it religious or just a product of boredom or art? Who knows, maybe all or none of the above since we can't exactly ask whoever made it.

Or war trophy, personalized planting tool, back scratcher…

Why must every brick be from a temple, every carved trinket a religious relic?

So people will be more intrigued and pay the museum to see um.

because we have never found a culture like that that carves faces into things that didn't represent some thing religious or spiritual in nature? the culture isn't exactly known for it's mosaics and paintings now is it?

no one would carry around a war trophy like that, especially back then. the only time i've ever heard of anyone carving faces on common objects is if they have RELIGIOUS or SPIRITUAL significance. people might carve faces on tools if they represent a religious aspect such as a tool used in rituals, faces and heads have a looooooong history of representing the center of the spirit so the idea that this isn't a religious or spiritual artifact shows you really don't know much about the topic.

from what i've gathered it is an idol, more than likely an idol of a sea god of who ever carved it, most likely a local version of neptonos, the theorized proto-indo-european sea god, where neptune, poseidon, manannan maclir, etc.
from other sources it's reported to have scales, and it's one of the most identifying features of a sea god. after all it was found in the ocean, more than likely carved by someone to protect them while fishing and well... it didn't help clearly. another feature of sea gods of all kinds.
