The Internet Raised $44,000 So a Homeless Man Could Have a House

I posted a thread up a while ago about a homeless man that was given a winning lottery ticket. His reaction was breath taking. In order to understand the second video properly you need to watch the first. It is only a few minutes long.



The internet then raised $44,000 so the same homeless man could have a house.

This is how wealth should be shared.

If only the Government's of the world were to donate 1 penny [cent] of their OWN money we could see this kind of thing happening every day.

It's about time our so called leaders, on stupid income, gave us something back.

THIS is how people should be helped. By people who want to help. By people who can help. And in a way that the government has no involvement in.

In our country, there is no need for anyone to be homeless unless they wish to. Nobody should go to bed hungry, unless they wish to. More people give than we are often lead to believe. They give in ways like this. In ways that can do the most good. I think most people would help if it were easier to do... Like this. People are inherently good. I believe that. This proves it. As this man got a tear in his eye, I did too. I have never been homeless, but I have seen times where I would cry to have $10 in my hand. Most of us here can sympathize with that and that is why we give when and where we can.

I wish more people would realize that we can take care of our own.

This warmed my heart and I thank you for sharing it.

I think the first video was much more emotional. The "fake" lotto.

The homeless guy knows him from the first video(if someone is wondering how he is familiar).

I would be more impressed if this weren't just an isolated incident sparked by a viral video. It's great that the guy got a house, but where is he gonna get the money to keep it? I'm sure that being on the streets was just a symptom of his other problems - which I dare not take the liberty of guessing at, but I frankly don't have a clue. I do know about being on the streets, and that the situation often isn't as simple as "not having a house".

But back to the main point: this is an isolated incident, and it disappoints me because while this guy is sleeping under his own roof for the first time in however long, dozens more are still stuck in that situation. People who have kids, people who have severe medical problems, war veterans and the like. You give a homeless man a crust of bread and leave fifty more sick and starving.

If you looked at the video, he has $21,500 or so in an account(from the fundraiser), also he said he has a job.

The original lotto video went viral, then this fundraiser started. I believe, some people were calling the original video a "set up" so he decided to redeem himself with this $44,000 donation(from everyone).

It's a nice story and a great idea but this is an important question that has to be asked , here does the funding come for the upkeep?

I didn't watch the whole video but is the guy getting the house getting any training , education or job opportunities where he can become self sufficient? I really hope he is, getting a house is wonderful. Getting a house and a job can be life changing.

Which, of course, is the rational response to being accused of staging. More staging.

mmm i dont know, showing faces like that, especially to get it to go viral is not a good strategy.

Considering, he has a well rated Youtube account. That would be a really really dumb move.

This isn't some random nobody posted an video with no identifiable source.

Heck, even if its fake, sucks to be him.

Oh, and remember those other people I mentioned could really use something like this, but aren't getting it? There's this "Save Laura" thing on Kickstarter. Quick excerpt for context purposes:

My mom is a superhero. She has given birth to nine kids, homeschooled seven, and two of us have gotten free rides to college thanks to her. She is a teacher, a nurse, a work-out buddy, and a friend. I alway thought she would live forever.

Now I don't know if she'll make it to sixty.

Early last year she was diagnosed with Hepatitis C. We were frightened, but thought we would qualify for some type of aid. Not so.

My mom's Hep C. is chronic. Her liver is already in cirrhosis, and she has developed Petechia and Vasculitis as side effects of her body failing. The treatment that could save her life? Around 80,000 dolllars, maybe 100,000. We don't have coverage for that, and Vanderbilt denied us assistance.

The goal is...$10,000. A fraction of what is realistically necessary to pull her through this, but still a good amount to work with for a start. More to the point, a mere quarter of what the minions of Cyberland generously donated to this homeless guy. You know what's been raised so far? $850. $850 to save someone's life, in contrast to the $40,000 raised to purchase a house.

And that's why I'm disappointed in the internet. A bum gets a house, but a superhero dies. Go figure.

Well if you watched the video the first thing the homeless guy said to him when he walked in was " Guess what? I got a job" He probably was offered a job after the first film by some business owner in his area that wanted to help. So in the end this kind of stimulated the economy in a way by turning the homeless man into a working tax payer. good thread though

my thoughts exactly ! Property taxes.yep..that's going to take a bite. I'd sell it for exactly 40k and get an small RV..

And that just makes everything okay for the mother of nine, right? You know, the one who is three steps shy of the grave and asking for help from the same people who got that homeless dude a house. The kind of help that saves lives and such. Unfortunately, she's not really getting it. But that's okay, as long as the homeless dude is no longer homeless. I should make it clear that I really am pleased for that guy. He seems like a genuine person and his life will never be the same. I just wish the internet was more consistent about rewarding people for their hard work when the government doesn't. No point in flaunting your good deeds if you can't keep them coming.

I'm vexed that the people who deserve money or help or support don't get it. I'm vexed that this guy just randomly won the opportunity to turn his life around, but that mother of nine might not get the same chance because she wasn't in the right place at the right time. What you do in life doesn't determine that. Who you are doesn't determine that. Just plain ol' coincidence can make the difference between being a beggar and being a homeowner. Or the difference between a proud, healthy mother and a corpse.

I don't care if you agree or approve. That's my opinion and I'm stickin' to it.
