Just to be clear, you can think of a sonic boom almost like the wake of boat in water. As the boat (plane reaching supersonic) travels through the
water (air), it leaves trailing behind it, and expanding outward, a wake.
So for the sake of argument, let's say that the plane literally followed the coast line. In this instance, as long as the plane maintained Mach 1 or
greater, and traveled the entire coastline, the entire west coast would be able to hear it.
