Well, I don't know how your advice about tucking heads between knees helps earning reputation, so how do you suppose the turret blew off?

There is a big difference between being a smart a$$ in response to stupid thread that has been discussed soooooooo many time on this board that is not welcome by most (what I did) and deliberately spreading ignorance that had been debunked, as well as deliberately ignoring the fact that the original information was flawed (what you did)

I don't know how the turret got off that tank, but it obvious to anyone with eyes (except you) that it was not done with a mine, or several mines.

Did the Iraqis repair, wash and paint the hull after blowing it up?

Love your avatar BTW

What the hell is wrong with my avatar? You don't like girls?

Discussing blowing up M1 tanks, might be considered an act of unamerican and unpatriottic behaviour, but it's more challenging to try defeat a very hard target than to discuss how to kill soft targets with american cluster bombs...

Discuss whatever you want, just don't be deliberately misleading. I am sure it is much cooler for that turret to have been blown off by a land mine in your mind, but in the real world we have these things called facts, and truth. Pretend all you want, just leave the ignorance in your head, where it belongs.

BTW, the American in un-American is capitalized. I dont usually care about such mistakes (its not me it makes look bad) but that is just disrespectful.

What are you talking about? Abrams go off roads all the time. They operate off road in Iraq all the time. They operate in the swamps at Ft. Stewart easily.

And there was only one instance of an Abrams having it's turret blown off. When it drove over a mine with sufficient power to blow the turret off. Even then, the commander survived. The reason it was not mentioned in the report was because it happened after that report was written, after the initial invasion of Iraq.

Funny this pigeon idea

What if I make a trap? Dig a deeeep hole and wait the tank fall into it?

The VC used similar tank traps in Vietnam with a shapened I beam in the middle. Worked pretty well. Didn't see many tanks in Nam.

Actually, where tanks were used in Vietnam, not in the jungle highlands, they were very effective. During the later parts of the war the NVA made heavy use of T-55 tanks.

I believe M48's could cross rice patties.

In response to the M1 getting stuck in the mud, well the one reported incident from GW1, the M1 while being stuck took hits from T-72's and killed 2 with one shot and killed another behide a sand dune. So M1's can get stuck, but do so at your own risk! Source: Tom Clancy Armoured Cav (p.57-58)

It could happen if the mine blew through the belly of the tank, and the ammo cooked off. Could quite easily take off the turret. Seen it a few times (albeit, on T-series tanks, as they get killed more often
)

Any kind of ammo cook off in the Abrams will not move the turret at all. The T-xx tanks have the ammo in a circle under the turret, so whenever it blows it acts like a rocket booster, sending the turret up and away. The Abrams has it in that big turret bustle behind the tank, it has blowout panels so any explosion is forced away from the crew.

Those Russian T-series seem like death traps to me...no wonder they mass produce em, they are designed to die. Doesn't one have a fuel line under the turret ring (cannot remember which one, think its the T-72)?

Yes Abrams tanks can get stuck in the mud. The USMC did so during OIF. The Abrams with the turret blown off was a result of hitting an IED. The IED consisted of multiple artillery rounds wired together. As for RPGs yes they can penetrate an Abrams but in only a very few locations. Also RPG penetration results very based on multiple factors, angle, distance, Abrams variant, etc.

The best way to take out an Abrams is to get behind it and fire an RPG into its weak spot; the strongest part of a tank is the frontal armor. Trying to take out a tank from the front, especially an Abrams, is suicide. But if you can manage somehow to get behind it (which is also difficult due to infantry and other tanks) and fire an RPG into the small weak spot in the back, you can disable the tank; the transmission gets messed up or something.

The other best way is to use attack helicopters designed to blow up tanks, like the famous tank hunter, the Apache.

And yes, tanks do get stuck in mud. In Iraq, one tank got really stuck and then they had to call in an M-88 tank retriver, capable of pulling 120 tons, and IT got stuck too; they did eventually get back both vehicles though.

I was reading in this book recently about the Iraq war though where the one tank got disabled and couldn't steer correctly, or something like that, and here it was the leader of this entire line of vehicles. They were supposed to turn at a crossroads, but the tank drove right on past it, leading everyone in the wrong direction. The vehicles eventually turned around, but they had to go rescue the tank crew. After they did that, they dropped some grenades inside the tank.

One weak point of the ambram is fire, there are accounts of US troop bailing tanks because they suddenly set on fire. the challenger if slightly better but weaker shells and firepower

Actually, as dissmaying as it is to say, the RPG's in Iraq have worked to a certain degree against the Abrams. I guess there is a spot or two that are weak to that kind of shaped charge. The US has lost some M1's due to RPG's.

The Hellfire and its British version the Brimestone will defeat any known tank armour passive or reactive, these missiles just eat tanks up. The AGM-114K HELLFIRE II even has a dual warhead for defeating reactive armor which Russian tanks like to use.

Yeah, like I said, if an Abrams is coming towards you, you can pretty much fire as many RPGs as you want and they'll just bounce off the armor, but if you can get behind the thing and fire into that one small weak spot, you'll disable it.
