I'd hope the OP can tell the difference between a B-52 and a C-17/C130, the latter being a turboprop too.

I'd also think if B-52's flew low over London, there'd be a lot of fuss as they're not quiet planes.

They do when you have two shooting touch and go landings. They also appear to be more than two.

This is possible but from what the OP said it sounds like it would be unusual. The important thing here is to first identify the planes. The reason I asked about the type is because the OP said possibly a C-17 or a Hercules...problem is there is no way to confuse a C-130 with a C-17. I've also recently read a story about the possibility of the B-52s at Barksdale being deployed to forward positions although I haven't read anything about that actually having been done. The OP was curious enough to post this thread in the first place so I thought he may have taken the time to look at some pictures and might now be better able to tell us what he saw.

True, they are very noisy, as are C-17s and C-5s and the OP did in fact complain about the noise.

I'll ask on Fightercontrol. Someone on there is bound to have seen them and have more information.

It's unusual in some areas, but still happens. I'd be as impressed as hell if the RAF had all 8 of their C-17s in the air at once. To say that's extremely difficult is a major understatement.

If they did, I'll pass on your complements to my Uncle, him being one of the RAF bigwigs for the Transport aircraft.

I'm going to stick to my original guess - ferry flights from Afghan bringing home the huge amount of kit we've got there.

If they did tell him I said damn nice job. I've seen some very sharp units have problems getting all their birds up at once.

Maybe they were flying in Ukraines gold which has to go via London 'by arrangement'

Of course Im aware of restricted flying over populated areas. I thought that was a given. Dont most folks realize that? I guess not.

And with populations growing, and military exercizing increasing, ships and conveys, planes and rail transport, does not imply any "World War Three-ish" scenario.

Sometime in our future, sadly it may mean exactly that. But then, the skies would be dark with planes, roads congested with convoys, and ships heading outbound from the coasts.

Just seeing 5-10-15 of them together over an area one doesnt usually see them...WW shouldnt be the very 1st thought.

We do move them around and see them occasionally in areas not normally used.

Could they be coming back from afghan ? I was under the impression that UK forces are currently withdrawing troops and equipment out of afghan. Could be them flying back into Brize with all the gear. Gutted I didn't see them I'm just easy of London in Essex. On a side note though I saw an apache fly over my work today .. Desperately begged it to unleash a few hell fires into my work

Edit: star and flagged as you done some research and this is one of the better 'I saw a military plane fly over' threads. As for being world war 3, I don't reckon. You lucky bugger for seeing this though I'm gutted lol

I remember before the start of Gulf War I seeing heavy duty military aircraft flying over a town that is way off the military radar ie no nearby bases etc. I knew then a major war was going to break out. It sent chills up my spine. I hope it is just related to the withdrawal from Afganistan. After all there is a lot of equiptment out there. Stay safe everyone.

I didn't notice anything here in North London. I meant to reply to thread in general not your post.
