What if some particular serial killers are wendigos? Playing the devil's advocate.

So, we all know about the evil inherent in man.
How bad people can be. People like Jeffrey Dahmer, or the Canadian greyhound bus killer, and so on.
These people had a taste for hunting and eating their own species. They were as mad as mad could be.

The natives had a word for it, back in the day. Wendigo. Happens when a person's mind breaks, and they derive cannibalistic tendencies. They say that over a long enough period of the time, the person changes, always hungry, into an emaciated abomination. Now, a lot of people will tell you that it's just a form of psychosis, that the latter form of wendigo does not exist, but who really knows?

There are strange things in this world. And there are strange things in the woods at night.

well it certainly fits the description. a wendigo could just be a person who has gone stark raving mad and eats people. or it could be something like you suggested.

Perhaps like the werewolf myths,

physiologic disorders misunderstood.

Perhaps. But the notion of the thing gives me the creeps.

Some emaciated, unknown and hungry thing out in the wilderness, it's freakishly starved and thin torso mistakable for a tree trunk, then the stench of the thing... The idea that it can become a person, drive them to madness and cannibalism, and wear them.
