Exactly, statistics obviously has its limits and can be done badly, but in general most policy making, making sense of data and large groups of people
is next to impossible without high quality statistics. And, it is used in just about every social science and physical science. I used it in
psychology research and now I use it in international development work.
A major problem (as a former science teacher), is that generally speaking most people do not have any solid training in the philosophy, foundations,
and methodology of the scientific method, including statistics, research methods, and so on and so forth.
