Army Guard misses recruiting goal

The Army National guard has fallen signicantly behind its recruiting goal for the year. The goal was 56,002 and the actual count of enlistees was 49,210. They also missed last years goal by almost 7000.

This could mean longer stay of duties for active members and the inability to fully staff some units.

WASHINGTON � The Army National Guard has fallen significantly behind its recruiting goal one month into the military's new fiscal year, continuing a downward slide that began in 2003 and could make it harder for the Pentagon to find enough troops for the war in Iraq.

Hmm I wonder if the subject of the draft will be heard more frequently, once it becomes clear there are not enough military people to safely staff and protect, what other choice will they have? There was also an article in todays Buffalo News that applications at Westpoint and other military academies have been receiving fewer applications.

You know who I feel bad for? Those once gung-ho patriots that were doing what they believed was right with the intention of going home to what they were protecting at the end of the day are now instead fatigued souls being told that that have little to no choice of seeing their families for more time then they put in for. Whatever you think of the war, you have to feel for them.

They will simply create a new division or two and fund them. It�s all about supply and demand. If we need more soldiers then bigger enlistment bonuses and better pay will be offered. If you could get $20,000.00 bonus and $50,000.00 for college when you leave high school and you have a 98% chance of coming out of the war just fine and less than 1% chance of getting killed AND you get to kill someone with no consequences AND you get a lot of respect of peers and family�well I know a lot of teenagers that would jump at that.

Forget a draft, the military hates the idea. Draftees are nothing but trouble to a professional soldier. You won�t be seeing one.
