Ottawa and Sikorsky Aircraft of Connecticut signed a pair of contracts Tuesday totaling a reported $5 billion for the manufacture and maintenance of
28 CH-148 Cyclone helicopters, and to deliver the first on November of 2008. The Cyclone will provide a much needed platform for the men and women in
Canadian uniform. "With a helicopter like this it will be able to perform the diverse and difficult roles needed in Canada along with a global
security environment" said Defense Minister Bill Graham. Sikorsky will face a $100,000 per day penalty if they fall into default to a maximum of $36
million if it doesn't meet the deadline.

"This acquisition is one that will provide significant economic benefits to Canadian companies from coast to coast for decades to come." The first contract, worth $1.8 billion, covers the purchase of the helicopters. The remaining $3.2 billion is for a 20-year service, training and support contract.

I see this as a good thing all around, some employment for our American friends as well as some for Canadians, and some decent and safe helicopters for our Canadian Military and Rescue personnel.
