I have not been here very long, but I really enjoy reading various sides of various issues. I thought It would be nice to erase the lines for a moment and take a moment to reflect on lthe good things for a moment.

I am thankful for my friends and family. I am glad I have a job to go to every day (even though I don't always like it). I could go on, but it is just the basics I think so many take for granted.

We are living in uneasy times and it is great to be able to come to a place where you can voice your opinion. Thanks ATS!

A very nice sentiment rachlls.

I'm sure we all have lots to be thankful for and often times people are too involved in finding the negative to remember that.

As far as I'm concerned every day that I'm here is a day I'm thankful for because in a world as crazy as this one some people don't have that stability.

Oh, yeah, I'm also thankful for ATS being around for yet another year to help me learn more about other people.

Happy Thanksgiving to those celebrating. And those of you who aren't, you can have turkey tomorrow too.

In a really brief summary a group of people came from Europe to what's now the USA in 1620 aboard a boat called the "Mayflower". They had a horrible winter and were in bad shape until they were befriended by a group of Indians including Samoset and Squanto. The Indians showed the newly arrived Pilgrims how to plant things in their new home which had a different climate and when the harvest was successful the Pilgrims declared a day of thanks and feasting with the Indians.

It has been celebrated ever since, but actually only became a legal American (federal) holiday in the late 1800's.

Nowadays people use it as a time to get together with family and think about what they are thankful for.

It is an American Holiday. This link explains it's history better than I could.

wilstar.com...

Basically these days it signals the start of the Christmas Shopping season, the day after. Families gather for a big feast with traditional meats being Turkey or ham. Many people do not work Thanksgiving or the day after, thereby getting a 4 day weekend. Parades are telecast on the Television so folks can watch in comfort. American Football games dominate the Television after the parades. While we are supposed to reflect on the good things that happened to us and be grateful, this seems to be hollow words mostly. Thanksgiving weekend is the time many people and almost all businesses decorate for Christmas.
I believe it had noble beginnings, but in my lifetime (52 years) I have seen commercialism conquer it. There are still some who view the day as a time to thank Family, friends, and their God(s) for their presence and blessings. The number of those people, however, seems to dwindle each year.
I hope this answered your question.

I'm grateful that:

  • I have a wonderful fiance, who manages to show me that, despite all the horrors, evils, and terror we are exposed to every day, the world is still, occasionally a beautiful place.
  • My father survived his esophagal cancer surgery, which usually claims 1/4 of the patients during recovery. His health has returned, and he is doing better than ever.
  • My sister is fully employed and able to support her son on her own, during a time when a job in the tech field is getting harder and harder to obtain.
  • My friends have, in my absence, found their own happiness, in the form of starting their own families with the one they love.
  • My mother is still alive, and thus, able to cook the turkey this year... the only person I know who can cook it correctly.
  • Bush can only be in office another 4 years.

Indeed. In this season of looking back and being thankful I must say ATS is one of the forums I have found to really contribute to my life.

Then their descendants wiped out the Indians and took their country.
What a nice way of showing their thanks. :shk:
