They aren't giving you a side dish of poison, they're giving you a side dish of reality. If you've led a sheltered life, it might look like poison. But it isnt.

Sometimes you have to smack people in the face with reality before they'll admit it exists. Do you really believe Nas or Tech did those things in those lines you quoted? Of course not, because it's ENTERTAINMENT.

And no one is a saint. If you're expecting that from anyone (even actual saints) you aren't on the right planet. Just because someone lives a life you see as wrong doesn't mean they aren't close to God or have anything spiritual to teach.

You want to find God? Look where he's most needed.

Im not bashing on underground hip hop; i clearly said in my post that i would consider an artist if hes independent. All im saying is be careful of the effects words/music have on you! Also, consider the intention of said musician /artist /rapper. "Music only influences your phyche if you let it" This is 100% false. This is like saying advertisement has no effect on me. Your subconscious mind is absorbing everything around you like a napkin, whether your aware of it or not.

Like I said, it depends how strong minded a person is. Many people can see past the BS. Advertising has almost no effect on me. I don't buy crap just because I see it in a commercial. I go based on the ratings, durability or taste, and determine if it's cost effective. I like certain music because I can relate to it, but I also very much enjoy music that offers insight into other people's lives. It's nice seeing life through somebody else's eyes. It can help you understand why people do what they do. Many people say that life imitates art, but really it's backwards. Art imitates life, it doesn't create who you are.

"Starks pass the chrome, watch a nigga get blown out his mutha#in dome piece, deceased, laid to rest" - Wu Tang Clan (song) Wu-Gambinos

Yes, that's a great song! You do realize that the Wu-Gambinos track was supposed to have a mafia theme, in fact the whole Cuban Linx album was pretty much a play on Scarface. Wu was gangsta rap, but put out tons of positive messages overall. They weren't just about killing, they were creative wordsmiths, and a bunch of them rep 5%er Islam. They were such a diverse group of talented individuals and that made wu-tang awesome. So many different angles and themes.

"While simultaneously stabbin a pregnant fat bitch, on a vomit covered mattress, while the fetus uses my dick to practice gymnastics " - immortal technique (song) In Da Club freestyle

If you like conspiracy theories, immortal technique is your guy. But yeah, he's harsh and curses a lot. This is no secret, but again, it's art, he's not really saying he's going to do that. He's trying to use some wordplay to make a joke.

These are the type of violent lyrics i was talking about in the OP that come to surface if you listen to this stuff long enough! Your naive if you think that these type of violent lyrics dont have an effect on your mind body and soul.
So keep listening if you wish, just know that these guys are not saints!

I listened to primarily gangsta rap for 15+ years, and I'm one of the most non violent people you'd ever meet. Part of the appeal of rap is that they aren't saints and a lot of it is a reflection of inner city life. I know most of them aren't real gangstas, but they represent a counter culture movement for the people that have been oppressed for a long time. At least that's the vibe from the 90s.

If you are looking for some "happy" sounding hip hop, then I would recommend Atmosphere. He doesn't curse that much and generally talks about his life and all kinds of poetical themes. Brother Ali is another great one, who is all about positivity and unity. He's a man of faith and practicer of Islam if you are into that thing, but his message far surpasses the religious aspect of it. And BTW, everybody curses in hip hop. It is next to impossible to find an artist that does not. Cursing is part of being an adult. Most people in general curse these days.

I did and she proceeded to tell me that the heavy metal I was listening to was satan's music and if I didn't watch out I would end up in hell for listening to it.

I will never forget the absolute joy I experienced when I asked her to listen to the satanic lyrics and saw the expression on her face. I was listening to Stryper at the time....lmao

Ah, perfect. Pull the ol' Stryper card on the bible thumper. Your experience has left me wilh absolute joy 😂 !

Not only is it quite disturbing, its hardly a dose of reality. More like a dose of depraved violent intentions.
Sure he is just metaphoric stabbing her with impaling her with his penis, either way it demonstrates a violent intent during intercourse, not one of mutual love or respect traditionally noted with close intimacy. I would have laughed at that in high school and probably jammed it too. Now I think about my former self, and wonder how such message could even be mildly entertaining.

Pffft, OP has never paid much attention to Oldies lyrics. I grew up listening to Oldies & prefer it over most other genres, but there's some eye-poppers in there. "Baby, It's Cold Outside" sure puts sexual pressuring on display (and others think GHB use, "What's in this drink?" lyric) Wonderful song for the holidays, no?
And Neil Sedaka's "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen" sure sounds like a guy grooming his molestation victim over the years.
They are two songs in particular that stick out as examples of music not being much worse off today than it was in the past lyrically. Oldies in particular had a habit of being underage lust/predatory tunes, whole lotta underage creepiness going on back then.

Old Blues in particular had the lyric market cornered for violent, & explicit stuff, check that blatantly explicit song of Lucille Bogan's that Liquesence posted. "Shave "em Dry" is from 1935, FFS.

When I went to South Carolina last month the rental car had Sirius radio. We took a trip through time and played the decades every half hour from the 50's to the 2000's. I explained to my oldest that he should take note how not just the tempo changes through the decades, but the lyrical content and mood of the song.

The fifties was typically very calm and gentle music with very conservative themes. Don't get me wrong there was the fun swing music as well that had lingered on from decades prior, but overall much of the music was quite tame both lyrically and in tempo including jazz and blues. Everything started going downhill in the sixties. Sixties music sounded like people constantly partying outside, which was typically the case. The 70's was very high energy and sounded like everybody went into the clubs to start jamming, which they did. Then electronic music and synths turned everybody into a DJ in the eighties and music branched out even further into different sounds.

My favorite music nowadays is symphony/orchestra, classic jazz with the bands not just the one person and their instrument. I also have moved from hip-hip/rap to more country. Honestly some of the themes are a bit similar, but I enjoy the subtlety of many country songs with how they admire their women. Rap has pretty much just become pornographic and obscene with its lyrics. More disrespect and subservience than admiration or respect. And the consumers frequently wonder why their relationships are shot out. They are basing them on #ed up ideas of "bitch get on your knees and give me Becky!" to which the young mind disillusioned girls just yield and submit.

Now as a comparison, compare these two songs, the first which I love to post from time to time because it really is a beautiful song.
Beautiful content. Respect, admiration, making up, and a sincere intimate connection. People who consume more of these themes are more likely to have better relationships with less dramatic relationship issues. Now compare it to this garbage!
Pornographic, no respect, no admiration. Individuals who consume more of these themes will have less stable and shorter relationships, see women more as objects of easy gratification, and have more dramatic disagreements and tend to just not be as committed.

Obviously there are outliers in every study and not everyone is affected the same way (nobody is claiming otherwise though), and these descriptions are in general and overall.

I only picked these two as a comparison of single theme and how they affect people without realizing. Just the same that your body is what you eat, so is the brain. Brains that consume complete garbage tend to produce garbage personalities and attitudes.

Killa priest is a great example. I also find that even though Gravediggaz started out as super horrorcore, their 2nd album is one of the most enlightening albums ever written.

First of all...I don't believe in Satan, though I'm a religious gaod-fearing person. But what I do know...some of these established religious institutions, use religious songs as a way to connect spiritually with gaod and to give them a "proper" moral attitude --- But others...use religious songs as a way to brainwash there followers, by using prejudice against other religions, and to castigate those people by accusing them of pagan worship or believing in Satan --- even though they don't worship Satan, or say, a Christian or Muslim religious figure or biblical text.

I don't think music can be totally responsible for turning someone into a spiritually bad person. If you are are listening to it, prob something wrong with you in the first place.

Mozart. Led Zeppelin. Bluegrass gospel. Opera. Heavy Metal. Speed Metal. My tastes are...eclectic. Currently, as I type this, I'm listening to Gregorian Chants from the middle ages.

Hail whatever!!

Actually Nas snuck in some guns to a party my friend was throwing. In the middle of the show the lights went out and there was some commotion and in the end a security guard got shot in the foot and they were gone. Not sayin it was Nas. Well at least he's prob not a Satanist. OP is talking about recent Satanist managed 'Hip Hop' artists.

One of my best friends became unhealthily obsessed with the music of Lil Wayne, Nikki Minaj, and Eminem, and I told him he was surrounding himself with negativity, but it was like it went in one ear and out the other. Then he committed suicide. He had problems before that, but, the music seemed to definitely be doing something to him.

Do you really not understand that it is a metaphor for being a sick MC? A large amount of what people say in hip hop is metaphorical bragging and boasting about their rapping skills.

The fifties was typically very calm and gentle music with very conservative themes. Yeah, but that's extremely general. The fifties were crap compared to the 60 and 70s. Creativity was extremely limited because society was heavily oppressed by religious folks and racists back then. Music didn't really start getting good until Rock & roll started taking over. Some of the best music in history was written in the late 60s and 70s and it was anything but poison. Creativity became less limited over time. Classic Rock is very deep music for the most part that promotes unity and peace.

That doesn't mean the music is responsible. That's just looking for a scapegoat. It's just coincidence that he listens to music that YOU PERCEIVE as negative, obviously your friend had some mental health issues. Last I checked none of those artists you mentioned talk about depression and suicide. Eminem does get dark at times, but anybody that listens to him knows he constantly reminds you that it's just art and music, not to take it seriously. The music you listen to is a reflection of you, it doesn't create you. Eminem has a HUGE fanbase, and 99.9999% of them are not killing themselves, committing violence or other crimes.

Of course I understand, after I entered into a adulthood and learned more about how media and propaganda work together to mold young minds. The thirteen year old kid that has been repeatedly turned down by his pretty classmate and jams this garbage probably will not. Or his 7 year old brother that hears it when the teen is laying it. or the two year old cousin wondering what the heck these words mean.

Maybe you were one of those kids that not only acted like you knew it all, but you actually did know it all, by the age of six no doubt!

The problem is young minds, especially if they are doing drugs and alcohol like the good role models in this type of music tend to glamorize, don't have a #ing clue! If they did, they would not need parents. They just hear sick ass words that appeal to them due to the controversial nature of the rebellious programming and imitate art with their peers!

The ones that are affected are the one who are arrested for carrying out crimes they became desensitized and attracted too due to the volume of unfiltered garbage and pollution their minds consume. This is why our society is decaying, because it has gone rampant since the seventies as free and broadcast media became ever more invasive and standards of decency fell. Perhaps this music should be played for ten straight years in schools and daycare as an experiment to see how the kids develop over time in contrast to students in schools where only classic jazz or classic symphony music is played.

In fact, to an extent this contrast already exists between deep urban school vs rural sub-urban schools by simple observation.

I was referring to adults, not impressionable children. Young children shouldn't be listening to that music in the first place. I get that it happens, but it's really no different from watching a movie with sex or violence in it, playing a video game with suggestive themes, or reading a violent swearing comic book. Hell, there are some books that are REQUIRED for English class in middle school that can be just as violent with adult language and racism as well. This is where parents need to be parents. Sorry but it is way over the top blaming music because a little kid listens to an NWA tape and acts out.

For teenagers, it's a different story. Teenagers are naturally rebellious and naive when it comes to the world. Every teen thinks they know it all, but none do. They will do drugs, smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol and swear because adults tell them not to, so they think it's cool. That's just the way it's always been, regardless of what music they listen to. Every high school teenage male thinks about sex 24/7 and that pretty much drives their entire existence. If doing drugs can lead to sex, they'll do it. If being cool and swearing and listening to rap can possibly lead to sex, they will do it. They have a one track mind at that age, which is why all of the mainstream rap music panders to simple minded sexual themes. The music doesn't create this behavior, it appeals to it because the behavior is already there. Sex is part of who we are, it's ingrained into our species.

The ones that are affected are the one who are arrested for carrying out crimes they became desensitized and attracted too due to the volume of unfiltered garbage and pollution their minds consume.

How often is that the case though? That statement sounds very presumptive. I consider myself desensitized to tons of things because they are part of reality. Women are raped something like every few minutes in the world, people die from violence every hour, people are persecuted constantly, killed in accidents, from diseases, from religious extremists etc etc. Why should we hide people from the real world? I used to be appalled by all that stuff, now I realize that's just part of the world we live in. That doesn't mean it's okay to do those things yourself. If anybody goes and commits a crime, simply because they like violent art, video games or music, then they had an underlying mental issue in the first place. Does that apply to the military as well? I mean what about soldiers being glorified and worshiped after killing people over seas? Isn't that also promoting violence and encouraging people to join them and commit violence? I'm way more annoyed at that then violent music, to be honest.

This is why our society is decaying, because it has gone rampant since the seventies as free and broadcast media became ever more invasive and standards of decency fell.

Except for the fact that it's not decaying at all. In fact it's much better than it's ever been. Violence has gone down, racism has gone down, people are more tolerant today than ever before. "Standards of decency" are just religious opinions. They have nothing to do with reality. The naked body is beautiful, it's not indecent. That type of thinking held us back for thousands of years. The idea that nobody is allowed to have control over their own bodies or express themselves however they see fit. You can't blame the art for that, that's just what people want. Sex sells, end of story. If the religious majority was so super concerned about this they wouldn't be the majority purchasers of pornography, alcohol and guns. It's all about the money today. Don't try to pretend it's about "standards of decency". If something sells, it stays. If you don't like it, don't support it.
