Four-alarm fire guts historic Masonic temple on Hancock Street in Quincy

A four-alarm fire gutted the historic Masonic temple on Hancock Street today, starting in the basement of the 87-year-old structure and burning for hours before it was doused by fire crews from Quincy and Boston.

The building is likely to be a total loss, said Quincy Fire Chief Joseph Barron.

workers were doing renovations in the basement when a grinding tool caused a spark. The workers attempted to extinguish the fire but were unsuccessful.

Thankfully no one was injured

Let's see, there is a Quincy fire department and a Boston fire department north of Hancock up here in the UP. I think the Masonic Center is on US41 though, not on Hancock Street. It is a strange thing that the names all seem the same and weirder because both those fire departments would actually respond if there was a fire at the masonic Temple up there I think.

What a coincidence that is.
