It's not war preparation rhetoric. It's a simple fact. The Iranians are members of international treaties that allow for free travel of all aircraft in international airspace. The US has every right to intercept any aircraft that's flying near their territory, but not to shoot it down in international airspace. The Iranians tried to shoot down a Predator that was in international airspace, which violated the law, and the US took steps to protect it.

Show me the law that states the Predator can't be there in international airspace, or that the Iranians have the right to shoot it down, when it hasn't performed a hostile act against them. I can show the law that says it can be there, can you show the one that says they can't?

So it's ok for the Iranians to violate international law, and interfere with operations in international airspace, since they live there? How arrogant.

When, during this encounter, did the Iranians violate international law? And when, during this encounter, did they interfere with any operations?

Your argument here is predicated upon a completely baseless assumption, that the Iranians intended to engage the drone. It could easily have been doing reconnaissance in the region. Even the biased article mentions that the only sign of "aggression" was being within 16 miles of it.

The only thing noteworthy here is that the Americans threatened the Iranians with superior technology. If that is somehow patriotic or masculine or some other low-browed quality, I guess I'll just wish you luck and move on.

When during this encounter did the United States violate international law? When did the U.S. show an act of aggression towards Iran during this encounter?

Your questions have no foundation.

It also did not say that the U.S. threatened to shoot the aircraft down. It was within range to use Air-to-Air missiles and it was seen as a potential threat. There was no pursuit.

You meant to say "the only thing noteworthy here is the American pilot gave a warning to an Iranian pilot." The funny aspect of it is that the Iranian pilot wasn't even aware of the craft's presence until the F-22 was on his wing. Lighten up.

Based on the fact that before this happened, a pair of Iranian Su-25s actively fired on a Predator in international airspace. Based on the fact that the pair of F-4s that were involved were heading directly towards the Predator in question. What, they just HAPPENED to be planning to do whatever they were going to do right where the Predator was? It's just coincidence that two armed fighters were heading directly for the Predator, within days of attempting to shoot another one down, in a blatantly illegal act?

however I'm pretty amazed that unmanned drones are the new way of dominating Airpower. The next step is to use older model aircrafts like the F16 as drones...

I would have like to see their faces when that had happened...

Except that those are target drones. Currently all long range UAVs, like Global Hawk, and Predator have up to a one second lag time between control input and reaction by the UAV.

The QF aircraft are short range, so they don't have the control latency that you see in "true" UAVs.

So again, it's just fine for the Iranians to violate international law, since they live there, but it's NOT ok for the international community to conduct anti-piracy, or other missions in international airspace? Got it.

First what international did the Iranians break? And how was he a threat to the drone? He was sixteen miles from it.

This was the second time that there was evidence that they were going to attempt to interfere with travel of an aircraft in international airspace. The first was when they attempted to shoot down a Predator. Per international right of passage law, as long as an aircraft is in international airspace, it has the right to be there without interference, as long as it does nothing to harm another country.

Again, I suppose with all that airspace, it was sheer coincidence that two F-4s were heading directly towards a Predator flying in international airspace? They just happened to choose the same stretch of airspace that the Predator was flying in?

Iran says the drone was in their airspace and had complained to the UN about it.

It is common knowledge that America is sending drones over Iran something we are not allowed to do. What would America do if Iran started flying drones over America?

And again, do you seriously think that they're going to send a slow, non-maneuverable, non-stealthy UAV like the Predator into Iranian airspace? If they're going to send anything it's going to be an RQ-170, or one of the ones that they haven't announced yet. Something stealthy, and faster. A Predator is a sitting duck that screams "HERE I AM" as soon as the radar turns on. You don't go into someone's airspace with something like that.

Do you think the predators are going to be used as decoys...if not in the future but now.?

I wouldn't be surprised if they do. Especially if the new Iranian passive radar system works as advertised.

Uh, we escort our drones near Iranian airspace? That seems to defeat the purpose of the drone IMO. Just outfit the fighters with cameras and sensors. At least those planes can defend themselves. Why risk two pieces of hardware at the same time?

Once you add the sensors in, you lose weapons capability, so you end up having to have an escort still. They only escort the Predators. ScanEagles, Sentinels (stealthy), and low value assets don't get escorted.

Iran has a very bad habit of claiming airspace to the edge of their EEZ water line (370km from coast).

International law states that territorial air ends at the same point as territorial water...22km from coast.

Now, let's put on our logical caps for a moment. What could a MQ-1 see, even from the edge of territorial waters? Nothing that couldn't be seen by a, much better equipped, surface vessel.

So, logic dictates that the MQ-1 was in one of two places:
A) Where claimed, in international airspace.
B) So far into Iranian airspace that it would have engaged ground defences before the Iranian F4's even got there.

Just by the nature of two fighters (albeit old) having to fly out to monitor the MQ-1 puts us well outside Iranian sovereign airspace.

good point, they do have cameras by the way and are easily outfitted with the spy tech. We escort there for exactly this reason, had he not been there we would have lost the drone.

Really it is all BS because we can read the paper in someone's hand there from space. That plus we know every text and email and capture any voice comms already. Drones are just a physical presence thing.

Honestly, I hope Iran can change but you don't go from wanting to wipe israel off the map one dayy to being peaceful the next. Let's be real here, they are the largest sponsor of terrorism in the world and are still ruled by a fanatic religious leader. The real deal is sanctions have worked for once, they either change or finally their people gonna change it for them.

As for the iranian airforce they should stay on the ground

LOL are you serious? right, we are going to start a major conflict over small beans dispute....WHICH WASN'T EVEN A DISPUTE AT ALL....in international airspace. Right.

Zaphod, I love it when you come in and show what's up regarding anything involving the skies.
I swear, this story was sooo cool that it only took just a little bit before the usual, same folks come in here crying, "OmgZ!!111 teh US iz eVIl!! tehy should leeve the po Iranians alonz!11"
For reals, it gets old.
People, no dispute happened. There was an incident awhile ago involving su-25 and drones, measures were taken to prevent said incidents, it was over international airspace, nobody got hurt, nothing but good showman ship.
If anything, you made that Iranian pilots night!! does he have a story to tell the guys back home over a few beers, ENJOY THE 15 MINUTES OF FAME. lol
