Polls, even admitted by the polling companies, are not meant to "report" on the opinions of the populace. They are designed to "manufacture" the opinions of the populace.

Read Walter Lippmann's "Public Opinion" or "The Phantom Public" or Edward Bernay's "Propaganda". If you want a good book specifically about polls and those that pay for them read Herbert Asher's "Polling and the Public: What Every Citizen Should Know". BTW - Asher worked for Gallup.

A mazon listing for Asher's book

MSNBC wouldn't know the truth if it jumped up and bit them in the a$$.

Its as I've said before, Obama, the media and many Democrats in Congress are intentionally misrepresenting the reality of that 90% statistic. Yes, its very likely that 90% support background checks in a generic sense. The bait-and-switch happens when they start attributing it to any specific proposal. They're assuming that, just because you support generic background checks, you would also support a specific proposal like Manchin-Toomey. Very often, that's not the case. As an example, I support background checks; I don't support Manchin-Toomey and I think the current checks are adequate. Most likely, many gun rights supporters feel the same way. In reality, its likely that support for that bill was FAR less than any 90%, and that's why even a few Dems jumped ship on it. I suspect that the 49-45 number you posted is probably closer to the reality of it, with support likely concentrated in urban centers.

This is how you lie with statistics, folks, and how you twist legitimate polling to influence public opinion.

In reality.... These polls are all bogus.

If REAL Americans (not celebrities, former politicians, socialist supporters, etc.) were actually polled, we would see that the larger number would be In Favor of the Gov't keeping their noses and fingers out of our Constitutional rights.

I agree with you.
my question is why would a left leaning newspaper such as USA Today report on a poll that goes against the "80% of americans want gun control" agenda?
