SEVERAL people, including children are feared trapped inside burning buildings near Waco, Texas after a massive explosion at a fertiliser plant.

At least five people have been critically injured in the blast and at least ten buildings are on fire after the major explosion at West Fertilizer, in the town of West, 30km north of Waco, about 10.50am AEST.

Hospitals have been warned to expect up the 100 people with injuries from the blast with the Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center issuing a call for all staff to attend.
The nearby Rest Haven nursing home is reportedly on fire, with several residents believed to be trapped. Others are trapped in an apartment building.

"We've got a lot of buildings on fire, we still have people trapped in an apartment building and possibly in a rest home," and emergency services operator said.
