I searched the site but could not find a good answer.
abovetopsecret.com.samuru.com...

The question: what+happens+to+the+pictures+we+post

I think it is very cool and handy to be able to post unlimited images up to your server.

I did a test the other day and uploaded a picture to the server, and then used it in a post.

I immediately went and deleted the picture from its folder and low and behold the image was still showing in the post. This indicates to me, that when a photo is uploaded, it is stored in two locations simultaneously and there is no way to actually get rid of the image.

So I was curious where do these images get stored? and why the hidden location for the storage of said images?

If a person say,,,,,,,,,,,posts a picture of themselves, and decides that evening it was not a good idea, and comes back to delete the posting of the image, or the image itself, there is no way to get rid of the image in the post.

I am a bit relieved I never uploaded anything that I now want un uploaded. Except maybe that frowsy old turkey.

or is there a way to remove it and I just can't find it?

Thanks in advance

Clear your browsing history and then try loading that thread again.

www.abovetopsecret.com...

I tried that but it still shows the turkey.

I will try another laptop that has never been on the site b4 on the same IP of course.

That lappy should not have a history of the thread, and there fore should not show the turkey.

By now, you must really think I am stupid.

Edit:

Loaded up another laptop that has never been on this site before (GPS chart plotter) and went to my turkey thread, and low and behold, turkey.

Cleared the cache and history on that machine (wont do it on this one as I may lose all my porno) and it still showed the turkey.

Odd.

Maybe a user who has never been to my turkey thread could go there now and see if I am having some sort of dream, or if the turkey in a roasting pan shows for you.

Let me know.

I hope this helps

Also, relevant image to remind peeps what happens when you upload something to the interwebz:

See you around, my friend.

ETA: I had participated in a similar thread and thought you might find it interesting: Quick question about ATS uploads! (And Image Deletions)

Hey thank you.

I guess that shows it does not go to two folders, it gets deletd when a user deletes it and it does NOT leave a little red X.

Thanks Cassy, I appreciate the help.

Up the trail I will cook you a meal from my new cook book : "One man and his meatballs".

If I keep this pace up, I am going to dispel every myth about this place on the Interwebs.

Cassandra must be a dis-info bot or something then.

Myth not 100% dismissed as of yet.

In the mean time kids, keep uploading closeups of our faces. lol.

I upload all images for here onto an image hosting site and then use the code buttons above the comment box to embed the image into posts. That way I'm in control of wether or not the image remains hosted. It's a bit more work but all security and privacy efforts are.

Ah, first time I'm called a dis-info bot, how exciting, I should mark it on my calendar

Or maybe... the same problem we had at the other thread I linked is happening again. There were several of us trying to figure this out, including mods and admins:

As a follow-up, here are some comments from Bill about image deletions and the ATS Uploader:

Content Delivery Network cache persistence

Image deletion and the CDN cache

Over five hours later, I just cleared my browser cache again (Firefox 10 Beta) and the picture of Octavia I deleted is still showing (for me, anyway) in my test post. ** That's a lot longer than the twenty minutes Bill mentioned, but it's a big cloud out there.

What we do know for sure, however, is when we hit that red "X" to delete an image, that image is supposed to eventually disappear, so that hopefully answers the original question.

** I should add: it is still showing intermittently, like it did in our earlier testing. On one page load it will be there, on another it won't. I hypothesize that this is an effect of the image url being redirected to different servers on the CDN, some of which have the image and some of which don't.

But since Rainbow Dash says not to worry, I won't worry.

It should eventually disappear.

You could always contact a mod and ask them to delete the picture if you want it gone right away from a post. I've seen that happen in the member's photo thread where the "Reason for edit" said: Removed picture at member's request.

I used to think the same thing happened.

I tried doing a test a while back and the pic showed up for me but, others couldn't see it, all they got was the red x-box

Then I checked back a few months later and my pics were gone, even for me. www.abovetopsecret.com...

Just because it shows up now doesn't mean it will appear forever. If you ever delete something from your photo album, it will eventually disappear from your post.

Since discovering this, I send all my used pics to my #3 folder for storage.

That's an odd one all right.

This is the only site that a ctrl+f5 together will not flush an image from memory/cache.

It seems goofy tome that an image that was deleted 4 days ago is being draw by a users browser who has never had the opportunity to cache the image.

It can not be drawn from nothing if the image does not exist.

As a test, I went to a web site last night, where I have had various images posted for years. I deleted one image from the /images folder.

I went back, and low and behold the image did not draw, was a little red X in a box. (common for broken image path)

The "keep your chin up" image above, was deleted yesterday, 10 seconds after the post. Seems it to is being drawn from nothingness.

I will see what the expert has to tell me. Then will post her findings.

I tried with Internet Explorer 10, didn't log into ATS:

So it doesn't show for IE or Firefox on my side

Let's see what happens here:

I quoted the turkey post and copied the image link, does it show anything? I can't see it on my end.

Preview while writing this post:

Still no turkey for me

My take on it:

For years users would make awsome threads. Then NASA started to release the Mars SOL images, and Clementine images. The boom in threads on ATS having us look at rocks of various and sundry shapes was staggering.

And a few months later, when you went back to peruse the thread, you found that everyone used photobucket, and that everyone exceeded their bandwidth ex post haste. Or their account was 86'd altogether.

In any event, ATS saw a continuity issue in their content and took steps to resolve it. I think with the release of ATS 2010 (which rolled in 2011, IIRC), we saw this new image caching system go into play. We were told to use all manner of different tags to do this or that, but in the end everyone discovered that using the ATS or ATSIMG tags typically resulted in an image being kept forever.

Otherwise you just post a link to an external image.

It is all about keeping continuity on the threads, and maintaining ATS reputation of solid content.
