A Saudi cleric's has declared that babies should wear burkas as protection from sexual attacks.

Sheikh Abdullah Daoud said all female newborns should wear a full face veil in an interview with an Islamic television station.

He told al-Majd TV that wearing a burka would stop incidents of sexual attacks on babies, and tried to support his claim by quoting unnamed medical and security sources. The interview took place last year, but it was picked up by Al Arabiya news and social media websites at the weekend, provoking outrage and comments that such claims damage the reputation of Saudi Arabia and Islam.

Sheikh Mohammad al-Jzlana, a former judge at the Saudi Board of Grievances, urged Muslims to ignore "unregulated" fatwas and said the ruling was "denigrating to Islam and Shariah and made Islam look bad".

Sheikh Jzlana said that he felt sad whenever he sees a family walking around with a veiled baby, describing it as an injustice to children. Sheikh Daoud is not affiliated with the government nor considered a senior sheikh.

The Telegraph

Sheikh Mohammad, a former Saudi judge said that he "felt sad whenever he sees a family walking around with a veiled baby"?

This is an unregulated fatwa by a Saudi cleric and doesn't reflect mainstream Saudi Islam or Shariah law.

Still, it is weird.

What I got from that is that Sheikh Abdullah Daoud is attracted to babys...

Do we have any Saudi members on the forum who can confirm or not that some babies in Saudi wear veils?

I find it very difficult to believe.

I think that is beyond me to have babies wearing them. Bad enough seeing how they treat their own women over there. Have a look at the link below and see what they can get away with in their own country and their laws. Glad I don't live there, but I had to laugh at the cartoon but can't put it up here as I'm too lazy to get up out of my bed to put the laptop on as I'm on my trusty iPad that I got a mortgage on my house to buy

Daoud claimed that baby girls would be protected from abuse if they wore a full burka

Here's a creative, revolutionary idea: Teach your males to respect females as equals and partners instead of viewing them as second class citizens and possessions. If you raise young men to view women/girls as nothing more than outlets for urges you cannot control, then it is obvious you have a damn skewed set of priorities.

Agreed. This "news" is admittedly a year old regurgitated crap from a religious tyrant. It serves nothing more than to further confuse and distract the masses to discuss irrelevant issues like this, and not focus on real issues that will have a direct impact on your lives... Unless someone here lives where this news originated of course =b

What I also find weird is the fact that there are a lot of beautiful men, so how come they don't have to wear a giant sheet too?

Is this any more cruel than Jews chopping off babies foreskins?

Muslims do that too.

Who would take the Saudi Arabian Muslims serious anyways? They are a sellout to their own religion, and god. They are just like Tony Montana, everyone needs a bad guy.

Are 30 seconds of pain much less cruel than wearing a veil for a lifetime? You bet.

It is if you valued your foreskin. You can take a burkha off, you can't reattach your foreskin.

I doubt an infant is concerned about its foreskin.

Also: Why point out other peoples customs, isnt the topic Burkas and Babies?

You do realise that most infants grow up to be adults right?

Because it is relevant, I am sick of seeing threads about hate for Muslim people and customs, when half of the time it is hypocritical. I'd much rather be forced to wear a burkha than have a part of my anatomy needlessly removed against my wishes.

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

Dunno, ask a Muslim male, they also circumcise their male infants. (But you would probably prefer we not point that out, as your comment was decidedly to deflect a perceived criticism away from Islam... in the future, perhaps you should research your counter example to ensure Islam doesn't also practice whatever it is you're offering as a comparison or contrast. Helpful Hint: Both Judaism and Islam shun pork products.)

Furthermore, perhaps you should educate yourself on circumcision. Most non-western medical experts agree that circumcision is beneficial in regards to reducing the risk of contracting HIV as well as urinary tract infections. It is also a demonstrated fact that circumcision reduces the risk of both penile cancer and cervical cancer in the male's partner. I have yet to see any stats on burkas reducing STDs or assisting in pretty much anything outside of, I suppose, helping the wearer combat a chilly breeze.

First of all, it is only Shia Muslims that have compulsary circumcision. To address your point about circumcision being healthy, why does God make us born with one. Isn't it a bit of a criticism of God, to say hey God, you idiot, you got that bit wrong, let me correct it for you?

Thirdly, I have no idea why you mentioned pork, but I like bacon.

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

I'm not seeing this happening in this thread, unless you're claiming that the cleric in question speaks for a significant swath of Islam or that lusting after babies is in some way part of a particular custom. When we lose the ability to point out the lunacy of an individual's stupid statement about masking some attractiveness of an infant for fear it may offend an entire group of people or custom, maybe it is time to reassess our priorities. I think most of us are educated and smart enough to recognize that the idiot cleric doesn't speak for more than a small, radicalized, and very dangerous sect of supposed Islamics. Those Islamic people who find his statements sickening and perverse, also known as the majority of Muslims, would likely join us in this thread, and denounce him as the rest of us are doing.

As an ATS Staff Member, I will not moderate in threads such as this where I have participated as a member.
