The Mayanmaniacs (Mayacs) have disgraced Mayan culture by the whole failed 2012 farce.

The legacy of 2012 will be selfish stupidity.

Ascension? No. It was just degeneracy.

When a site is damaged some of the information is lost for ever. There are bound to be brilliant new ideas in the future to extract more information from the site.

Here is an example. Cooking sites have been known for many cultures. It was figured out that the cracks in the sites could be gleaned for traces of material that could be used to identify the foods that were cooked. Even a scorch mark needs to be saved so that future generations can learn more about what happened in the past.

I would also point out that treasures here in the US have been vandalized by creationists as they have added dinosaurs to petroglyph panels and carved human toes onto dinosaur prints. It's not just the Taliban and other Muslim extremists. Religious extremists come from all sorts of places.

Good post Stereo!

Indeed, campfire sites have been especially important for paleolithic studies.

In many ways, the new-agers have done what christians did to Mayan civilization, in that they have misrepresented it to suit their agenda. What has been lost is a proper respect for an amazing pre-columbian civilization.

It is interesting to note what wahhabis are doing to archeological sites has been done all over the world. From building cathedrals over temples, razing whole areas or burning books, pieces of history have been lost forever thanks to "chosen" ones.

Thankfully, object archeology exists though it is still hampered in many parts of the world.

Hopefully, now scholarship on the Maya will supersede new-ager idiocy.
