To Dad (He's Dead)

Many times I’ve begun to write these words
To tell you how I feel and how I am.
It’s been a while since I saw you take your last breath
But it feels just like yesterday.

We all knew when you were alive
That you were truly one of a kind,
But it was only in hearing everyone’s stories
That we came to know just how true it was.

I have that family we talked about now.
I can hear your words even if I can’t hear your voice.
I wish they could hear them too.
They only know you from our memories.

My true love lost her father the other day.
Did he enjoy the beer you welcomed him with as he arrived?
I’m sure you’re both smiling and laughing,
Telling stories about when we were little.

The rest of the family is doing alright.
Mom’s moving on well, at least she is trying.
She’s happy, but you can see in her eyes how she misses you.
That will never go away.

I know this is something I don’t have to say,
But thank you for everything, and I love you.
You stood with me through all my faults and mistakes,
And helped make me who I am.

I’m sure as you watch over me
You shake your head now and then
And wonder what I must be thinking.
I’m doing my best Dad, life is just as hard as you said it was.

Out of the three poems you wrote. This one touched me the deepest. I to lost my father back in 2004, was a very ruff year for me, dad and wife both in the same year. So yeah, this short poem resonates with me deeply and wanted to stop in to share my support and give you a star and flag on your fine work here.

Thanks for your support.

Loosing my father was one of the toughest moments of my life, as it is when anyone looses a parent. Out of the three poems I wrote (so far) I too think this one hit me the hardest. It was difficult to think about how much has changed in the time since I lost him, and to think about his last moments.

My sincere condolences to all those who have lost a parent, or anyone that they loved.

Yet another exemplary display of emotion. No one can dispute the feelings between a father and a child, and you, from your perspective, have brought your father back to us to show us how he was. It's so apparent, the love, and the remorse leaves us with our own mortality looking us in our face. Fathers are legendary, or not, but my own daughter (16) idolizes me. I don't deserve that, but your prose lets me see the truth to that relationship.

Flagged.

Thanks for the kind words of support. As you know well, it feels good as a writer for the reader to be able to connect with the words.
