I remember reading about serious amounts of Radiation past a certain point outside the earth. Could anyone elaborate on this point? Wouldn't this deadly radiation have made the moon-landing impossible?

The area I think you are referring to is the Van Allen Belt, here is an ATS search with results for it.

the van allen belt between earth and the moon is what your thinking of and if you were to stay in the belt its self for any lenght of time yes it would kill you . But its like xrays to see your bones if you get xposed to more the 400 and some odd rads it will kill you .
in your life time your total rads xposer is probly less then 100 including and xray photos taken of your bones .
Through going through the van allen belt on top of this your xposer would be 120 at most.
But the most important thing to know here is one word in van allen BELTS.
Its the word belts .meaning the radation is confined to a strip around the earth and if you were to lets say go straight up from the pols you would NOT get anyware near it.
So even by lunching from florida you could plane a path that Doesent take you through the thickest part of the belt rudicing the anmount of xposer to less then the amount you get from an xray . and rember they were only in the belt for a few minits at most and even nasa shuttle people get radation xposer when doing space walks .

The Van Allen belt is a problem, but for some astronauts outside a craft on EVA or walking about the lunar surface would have to be concerned with cosmic rays from deep space and then solar flare activity from our own sun. There have been several times when our astronauts in orbit and on the moon needed to heed a flare warning and get to shelter. I think there was a particuliarly close call with one of the later moon landings.
