I hate my generation.

Please do not blame the kids themselves, rather blame hollywood and mtv. It's no wonder kids are acting the way they do. What goes in, goes out.

I don't know, I'm 20 and I think the worst generation alive is the baby boomers. Most of them are extremely stupid, religious, and watch Bill O'reilly or listen to Rush Limbaugh.

Ure story sounds kinda like mine... I have no contact what so ever to my old "gang of guys"... Exept 1 of them who is a honest decent human being ...
And its not just your generation... Like another guy said, its all generations... U cant make them open their eyes and ears... And its not even sure were right... We might aswell just be subjects of another form of propaganda... SO keep a open mind and thrust ure guts!... Life is choice, make the right calls.

I read your entire thread and I was amazed how sincere and honest you are. I'm a teacher, so I spend a lot of time with your generation. Unfortunately you described your generation to a T. I and many of my fellow teachers are very much concerned about your generation. The apathy and don't care attitude toward their education is quite alarming. (It's one of the big reasons why the U.S. has dropped in the world's educational rankings).

The current generation wants respect, but they don't respect each other nor their parents or teachers.
The vulgar language I hear in the hallways and in the classroom on a daily basis is unprecedented. Some girls no longer respect themselves and talk as vulgar and sexually explicit as the guys. The amount of girl fights out number boy fights. The sagging pants fad is obscene as compared to other clothing fads of past generations. Some of the fads like tattoos and piercings are much more permanent. How many of these kids, once they mature, are going to want a tattoo they thought was cool during their school age years? I've always said in my posts here on ATS, walk the halls and spend a day in a classroom to get a feel of what teachers are up against.

Having said that, you should be proud of yourself that you've moved beyond the negative attitudes and drastic fads that are corrupting your generation. It's only going to open more doors for you in anything that you pursue.

I can agree with you on that 100%. A lot of these kids are easily impressionable. Some of the reality shows like Jersey Shore and some of the MTV reality shows give these kids a negative model to follow. They think these shows model normal girl and guy relationships, and the use of vulgar language in every sentence is acceptable in society.

Hip Hop music has glorified a thug life style, disrespecting women, sagging pants and backward baseball caps are influencing kids from all walks of life. The easy access to pornography has created more teenagers to become sexually active and probably has contributed to an increase in teenage pregnancy.

However, parents need to teach kids right from wrong. They need to direct them down the correct path so they make the correct choices in life.

You're 18. So I don't think you're qualified to speak about your generation yet. Move to a different city, and then see if your generation acts the same.

Backwards baseball hats? God forbid. The 50's and 60's christian American model is gone. It's far too late to be blaming MTV and rap music still. They have the previous generations to look at.

it fascinates me that an 18 year old is aware of such things. i became aware or, i came across ATS when i was 16 (i am now 21) and also hated H.S for the same exact reasons you listed.
i also hate my generation.
i hate having conversations with foolish people that are still asleep in this american dream.
like a person above me mentioned, it's not their fault, it's this system that has taken these docile humans such route.

I've been meaning to create a post like this for quite some time now, but I just didn't know how exactly to put it together. But, after reading your post, I couldnt have said it any better. I'm glad to see that I am not the only one from this generation that is starting to wake up to the world around us.

ATS definitely changed me for the better and it can do the same for everyone.

I couldn't agree more.
I'm a gen Xer and I don't think of this new gen as bad or worse than
any other, including my WWII veteran grandfathers gen.

It's apples and oranges. The Op will get a ton of "That's right, it's your gen
that has ruined everything."so since it's a lot of boomers that are picking
on the current generation. I'm gonna say it, if I gotta name one,
boomers are my least favorite.

The strain they have placed on our country!
Selfish, flip floppers, 10 years as hippies changing the world
and the next 25-30 years emulating their parents
but doing so without the morals and drive.

Did I mention Selfish?
The politicians now by and large are boomers.
Making sure they get theirs as far as Social Security
but are already telling my Gen "Tough Luck"
They love their music 60's and liberal but their politics
Fox, Michael Savage & Rush.(Limbaugh that is)
They think by praising their parents
(my gens grandparents) they are somehow like them. Nope.
Hopefully this will balance this out.
I know many boomers that are great.
Just like I know many greats in this generation.

Excellent post Rome. Excellent. I've got an almost 18 year old step daughter at home. Her mother and I try to get through to her and we CAN'T. The education system owns them. The government owns them. The dumbing down of America worked to perfection. Planned out a long time ago. Mission accomplished.

Nothing has really changed as far as the different generations as far as I can tell... If you don't think so, wait until you are in your 60s and take a look back or start now by reading history books and watching old movies.... The only changes I have noticed is how much easier it is for people to get screwed around by the system since 1980 and the acceptance of dishonesty as the way to succeed... Today's young aren't a damned bit different than baby boomers would be if it took two incomes to provide them with crap they didn't really need.

Hey, I read your OP but have'nt read the entire thread. I'm prolly old enough to be your dad, but I'm willing to bet that alot of people of all ages agree with you. I certainly do. With that being said, there is a killer song called "I Hate My Generation" by a band called Craker. I think it's from around '91 or '92. Also, there's "My Generation" by The Who from '65. Check 'em out if you haven't already. I think you'll like 'em! Peace.

So I really wish you to see this. And I am going to post it before this whole shin-dig blows up with stars, flags, comments and all that. As I type this it is in a manageable state. Now. I am really, really glad that I read this. Because, well... it seems you, and I, and one other person whom I read in the comments. Are the minority on here. And by minority I mean young people. Specifically 18. I developed an interest in this stuff at a young age too. And I really am getting fed up with all the bull# kids, and all their problems and "issues." I find it easy to join both worlds, I mean I dress with the current "fads," I guess. I go to parties, and I have fun. Yet I realize that really is not whats important. I really didnt apply myself very well in high school. As you stated about yourself. I really, truly would have loved to discuss this stuff with. Well anyone my age! No one realizes that this is important things. Things that will shape the future as we know it. Or so I believe. As do you apparently. I am joining the Navy soon. Because i wish to be a Journalist. You know, make a difference and all that. I added you as a friend, and if you want to talk or whatever. To another young dude your age, then by all means send me a private message and we can exchange contact info and whatnot. I would love to hear about your religious beliefs. I myself am a Christian, but it is always interesting to hear what others believe as well. Hope to hear from you!

Oh god and I just read a comment about latest fads and not caring about education. 1) I tend to like educating myself on my own terms. That is reading lots, and lots of books. I don't DISLIKE High School education, or being taught by a teacher. But sometimes it annoys me and I lose interest relatively fast. Something I am attempting to change. 2) And at the teacher with the "sagging pants fad." Nothing annoys me more than a pair of "chants." That is shorts and pants mixed together with some underwear showing. I dress VERY cleanly. And it really bothers me when people are slobs. Or dress with those new/old disgusting fads.

One side point is, your high school experience, or any school experience for that matter. Is all dependent on who you associate with. I try and try to find people like me. But.... I really don't think most guys are. It really is obnoxious when I can find no like-minded people with who to spend my time with. Just something I have to say about it. I know... I am rambling. But frankly I have an excuse. It is, er, was... Fourth of July. And I was out, so I just got home and in Californian time it's 1am. No need to go into any anecdotal ramble here, but suffice to say I just got home. So pardon my lengthy response that I felt was needed in lieu of the current excitement I am experiencing at finding someone like me. Which is strange saying, yet, is what it is.

I am a bit older than you, but I have three children who are of "your" generation and they all, unfortunately, fit your description of being in the "Entitled" Generation.

I did all I could as a divorced, single, mother to raise my children right, to provide for them and to be a conscientious parent because I love all of my babies. As I was their sole supporter, I couldn't afford to give them everything they wanted, instead I made damned sure they got everything they needed, and taught them that they must work hard to get what they want. Unfortunately, their maternal grandmother and her husband did all they could to undo my teachings, despite my pleas otherwise; of course they had both raised children and knew better than I did.

Once they entered middle school, and moreso when they went to high school, they all became enhralled by peer pressure. Two children got heavily into the drug culture, becoming addicted to alcohol as well, and both remain alcohol abusers! The other child gets caught up in the, often illegal, activities of his peers and has made many bad choices in his life.

Obviously, this breaks my heart and I seldom hear from any of my children, but the only times I do are when they want something from me, usually cash, which I don't have in the first place, and wouldn't fork over in the second. My husband and my father both reassure me that I did indeed raise my children properly and am not to blame for their poor choices. It is difficult to fully accept, but they are all "adults" now and must make their own ways in life. >sigh<

I'm sad for and scared by the prospects for the future of the United States. They have no idea of what they're in for.

Very quickly, I'll put my opinion on the table. You're absolutely right about your generation but it's no surprise. That is what the education system is designed to do and too much money and research has been poured into it for it to fail. However, the only thing that has changed significantly since my generation (I'm 55) is the quality of the technology. We were programmed by books, newspapers, sermons, tv and movies. You guys have all that plus full-immersion video games.

My generation has had more time to break our programming but also more time to become entrenched in the system. The percentage of enlightened for each generation are probably fairly close.

So don't hate your generation. Hate the ones who are controlling them and do what you can to help spread the word.

Generations have been saying that the next generation is the worst for years. Please.

I beg to differ. I have a one child and teenagers are kind to to him. Last year a teen took it upon himself to teach him how to swim and had him jumping off a diving board in 2 weeks.

I take my 6 yo to a 3 story rope swing that is frequented by a lot of people. The teens will chat with him, encourage him, and cheer him on. teens in my day wouldn't of given a 6 yo a second look.

Just last weekend my son was struggling to swim and a teen instantly came over and gave him a hand.

i find the young cashiers at the store to be nice and helpful.

I have young 20 somethings living upstairs and they are always asking me if they are being too noisy.

I think they will be just fine.

I wish my city was like yours; children and teens here tend toward the stereotype of being mean to each other and disrespectful to adults. It's amazing how the mob mentality can take a sweet kid and instantly transform them into a vicious, mean bully! I also raised my kids to believe that police officers and sheriff's deputies are there for the benefit of the citizens, to try to prevent people frm being bad and to solve crimes they couldn't prevent. My son wanted to be a police officer, until he went to high school. Now, the "po po" are the enemy trying to keep him and his friends from enjoying themselves. My younger daughter was accepted into the Air Force, to my delight, and even headed off to Basic Training. She made it through three days before alcohol withdrawal put her into sickbay and then they sent her home. She was 20 at the time.
It breaks my heart.

I'll be honest, I almost kind of "forgot" about this thread. Of course, I decided to make it right before the 4th of July and my family were gone for a few days celebrating. Well, they were celebrating, I really wasn't.
