It looks like the folks at Massachusetts-based Terrafugia Inc. have themselves a flying car. The company has completed the first test flight of the production prototype of its flying car, staying in the air for eight minutes at an altitude of 1,400 feet, the AP reported on Monday.

The AP reports that so far about 100 people have put down a deposit of $10,000 for the Transition, though this figure is expected to jump when it’s shown off at the New York Auto Show later this week.

Terrafugia’s flying car, which comes with a $279,000 price tag, can reach speeds of around 70 mph on the ground and 115 mph in the air, and runs on unleaded automotive fuel. As a car, it can do 35 miles to the gallon, while off the ground it burns five gallons an hour.

Want to fly to work and avoid traffic on the way to the bank? Unfold the wings on your car and fly there.

(It turns out you can't link the video, it has to be viewed from a link... here is the full youtube link:
www.youtube.com...)

Now my question is... we can make a car/plane that gets 35 mpg on the road, and gets 23 mpg in the air...

So why are we still driving hybrids that only get around 40-50 mpg?

Something doesn't seem right when we can build a fricking plane that runs on unleaded gasoline and gets the same mileage.

Either way though... anyone up for 20 hours of flight school?

That's all you need to fly one of these babies yourself.

Same here. This is no flying car, more like a plane with foldable wings, so it can "drive" on normal roads as well as fly really slow...

Not very practical since you need a friggen airport to take off, lol. Also, not very practical as a car either, very little storage space and really no room for a family either....

Here's the video. You had some extra bits in the video link.

This thing looks ridiculous. It's not a flying car, it's a plane with fold-up wings.

I want one that I can take off from my driveway, fly to work, then land back at my house in the evening.

your embedded video links to v=D2fV7BGl9 but the actual id is D2fV7BGl9M4

but yeh, i wouldnt really call this a flying car, more like a plane that can be easily moved around or stored

you'd be sure to get some looks driving this around town, but who needs to drive when you can fly
