A 5.3 in the Northwest Territories seems like a rare place for an earthquake this big and the timing

I have been looking at the USGS website for years and I personally have never noticed a good size earthquake in this area before. I have been reading all of these posts about Elenin and the alignment coming up on 9-27 and all the talk about a bunch of big quakes. I thought I would keep an eye on the USGS site to see what happened and there was this oddly located earthquake. Does anyone else know if this is a normal area for quakes...

that is an odd spot. and not a tiny rumble. 5.3 is a fair eq. i think it was shallow too. i was surprised to see it there. i have been watching for months and months and first time i can recall!!!!

Diverse places? is that not in the Bible?

I just noticed that as well and found it odd. Hopefully it's nothing significant, we'll have to watch and see.

It's not really all that rare.

Here's a map of faults in the area, along with quakes from 1899 to 1995:



You'll notice, some in that area have been around magnitude 6 or 7.

I don't understand why ATS has a communal panic attack every time there's an earthquake. They happen every day. Everywhere.

You are being a little dramatic saying we are having a panic attack. I am thinking about this more from a scientific perspective. We are told about this alignment which could or could not affect gravitational pulls on the plates and I see an odd earthquake in a rare place so I ask if other people think it is rare. It is in fact less common location that does not have big quakes often. Since this post there has been a 3.3 in Los Angeles and a 3.5 in San Francisco.
