This is pretty disappointing from Dr Tyson. I quite like him.
As a scientist he is displaying appalling use of the scientific method. Using generalisations as criteria and ignoring evidence that does not support
his opinion.
He based his whole argument on visual sightings, while ignoring all physical evidence.
If he acknowledges that visual observation is unreliable then every scientific investigation that has used it for evidence by the investigator is
called in to question. Take Jane Goodall, who catalogued Gorilla behaviour by observing them over many years. He is saying that this is not
acceptable, even though it is accepted as fact by the scientific community.
And take astronomers for example, up until photography was invented they based their whole science on visual observations and guess what??? They were
correct.
I'm not saying that every sighting is an alien vehicle, but Dr Tyson's reasoning is very specious in this case.
If he used this line of thought in his PHD thesis he would fail big time.
