Come on EVERYONE, sing with me now...

THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND

This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

Can you imagine how those words make some surviving native Americans feel?

God bless America.

I guess you dont know any history eh?? They fought the way they knew how to fight. The natives did not have anything like a western society either, so what other way could they "fight for their country"?

Dbare.. Always a pleasure.

You know.. with America becoming the melting pot and including every race, creed and culture you would figure that the original Americans since before it was America should be getting some sort of good treatment...

Reservation conditions much of the time are terrible.

Yeah people who ever claim America or Canada has never committed genocide is clearly wrong. However I didn't understand why some of those people on the video weren't full Indian. That's kind of strange. Anyhow it is sad what happened in the past and we can't change it. One thing the video misses the point of is not all Indian tribes were so accepting of the white man I remember reading somewhere tales of how certain tribes used to raid colonial villages. There were travesties on both sides (unfortunately mostly on the Indians because lack of technology and unity).

The truth is what one of the first posters mentioned. No one really owns any land. The land owns us (I think this is also a Native American ideal no?). People are always immigrating and invading new places. Look at how UK people complain about the Polish and Muslims populating their countries and how Americans complain about the Mexicans.

I personally think they (Indians and Government) should do away with reservations because here in the US the Indians take an advantage of certain things they can get away with because our laws don't effect their territories. I don't even think they pay taxes. This is why you see so many casino's on reservations.

I understand the only thing you ( Indian ) folks want is equality .I enjoy your posts so this is takeing some time to put thought into it Your causes and your style of writing remind me of Billy Jack in the movie BORN LOSERS..That movie opened my eyes so to speak..I have read all the posts on here (except when typing) I probably will never know what the Indian people have endured through the ages Because it never happened to me .You stand up for your cause and your people The past is gone..I hope one day your dream will come true. Good nite Billy Jack where ever you are !

That's just the thing. I've mentioned this before in other threads. The rest of America is finding out what it's like to be treated like an ndn. Not that I'm happy about this, I'm definitely not. We live in some trying times and eventually everyone is going to have to fight for their freedom. Our IHS is terrible in Montana, and back home it's bad for my family in Pine Ridge.

Do away with the reservations? Force more laws on them? Make them pay slave taxes?

Wow, that's some justice you've got lined up there pal.

How about the US honors it's treaty with the Lakota Nation, and gives them back the 5 states of land that the US has no legal right to. How about we stop enforcing our perverted and corrupt laws on native peoples. We have no right giving them a reserve, and then policing it, even going so far as seizing their crops. Taxes? How about we abolish the illegal slave (income) tax for all men and women of this nation.

That will do for a start.

I protect what is mine, like they should have. And if you are proud and say that they did this ,then stay proud and say the truth ,that you simply got your arses handed to you when you chose to fight for your lands. Still,so what? You lost a war for territory and resources and cultural and societal integrity,SO WHAT?

Goodness gracious me, I've never seen so much ignorance packed into one post. So generally by your logic, you feel as though it's fine to go into someones home, rape their wife, kill their children, and put them into a small camp. And all of this is perfectly fine because "they got their asses handed to 'em" and they should've been able to defend themselves. Be careful, your white guilt is showing.

While I am not full blooded indian, I think the mark is somewhere areound 1/8 to 1/16th Cherokee, I have always had a strong affinity for American Indians and thier culture. It saddens me when I think about all they have had to endure throughout the last few hundred years, and at the same time I am filled with pride that they do not just give up and be assimilated. The American Indians are a proud race and I am happy to say that I am at least a miniscule part of that heritage. Changes need to be made, and it would be tremendous step for both whites and Indians if the US and Canadian governments would look back and honor those earlier treaties and give back at least some of what they wrongfully took without any reguard for the rightful inhabitants.
By the way, technically the US law can be interpretted to prove the Indians were the legal owners of the land, all you had to do to own land was inhabit it for a period of time back then, the indians were there longer that anyone.

Okay so what can I do about it? I am Dutch, I did not do anything against any of you ancestors?

Should I keep hating the Germans for starting a war 60 years ago?

I understand your struggle, but to move on we all have to forgive each other.

Respect.

Like I said no one really owns land. If we did honor the Lakota treaty you would have to move tons of Americans living in those states. Isn't that a double standard? This isn't the 1800's anymore what happened has happened, and we need to stop living in the past.

People have been invading and moving people off of land since the beginning of time. This is just one of the more recent occurrences. This isn't the first time this has happened in history! Example: the Roman Empire. The Third Reich. Vikings invading Britain and other countries. British Empire, etc. Should Britain kick out anyone with a Viking heritage because they took what wasn't "theirs" 1000 years ago? How about they move every Native Britain on a reservation?

The US shouldn't have signed the treaty in the first place if they did not intend to keep it. Am I saying all the laws and treaties that we turned our backs on was right? No, but that's what you can expect from governments and greed. Big shock the US and Canadian Government don't keep all their promises.

Right now about a million U.S. Citizens live in the territories promised to the Lakota people. What do you suggest we do? Move all the US Citizens with homes, farms, and ranches to other states and say "oh sorry we forgot to tell you this land really belongs to the Lakota people because of a treaty signed in 1868". That isn't right and the Indians would be just as corrupt and greedy as our ancestors that did not honor their treaties. The best thing Americans and Canadians can do is remember what happened and try not to repeat the same mistakes.

Well that video makes me happy to be a FRENCH Canadian, I remembered my history lessons but it's nice again to hear that native Americans started getting no respect when France lost. I think what happened to the Native Americans is sick, the Europeans never deserved that land, those resources and those lives they took away. This should of never happened! Native Americans we're 10 times more evolved spiritually then those stupid Europeans.

But now, if a Native American leaves his reserve, he loses almost all advantages.
The reserves are in really bad shape, the education is bad, the amount of alcoholism is bad, most money being made is with cigarettes, drugs and weapons dealing. The government don't really help that much, other then giving them higher welfare then anyone else and giving Native Americans "freedom" in their limited reserves.

I'm french Canadian and seriously, I don't get sh^% compared to immigrants that just got here, but that's another story.

At this point, I'm sorry to say but ...

GET OVER IT

I know it's so sad, so bad...but all this time, the Native Americans could have done a lot better. Alcohol must have poisoned their minds but it still was their fault. Why is the violence so bad? Why are they resorting to illegal ways to make more money? Why do most intelligent Native American get encourage by their families to just RUN AND GET OUT OF HERE?

Life on reserves is bad, really bad. And it's almost all the Native's fault.
The fact that they only have reserves now is not their fault at all but why it's gotten so bad is mostly their own faults. And who says that the corrupt Natives that signed those bad laws didn't get rich after?

Native Americans are to the point that it's loser whining, it's out of time, out of place and just too late.
I didn't do any of this to them, I have Native blood in me, I could ask to be on a reserve too and get my cursed rights. My "ancestors" did this but I ain't paying for their fault. It's too late, the land belongs to banks now.

There is no Native American vs White people no more, we are all victims of the banks, money and fake democracy. This is a useless fight.

One last time, to my fellow nature loving Native Americans to which I feel their suffering and respect their ideas.

GET OVER IT

Lol if they want to win other peoples money through gambling it's fine by me. Las Vegas does it. They also get a bonus because I don't think they have to pay taxes on it. I really don't care what they do with their land but I still think they should do away with the idea of reservations.

No matter what the US government gives the Indian community (tax breaks, land, not having to abide by the same laws of the US) it will never cover up what the US did to them. The best way to get around this is for the Indians to forgive the US and the US Government to treat them as equals by treating them as regular citizens. However a lot of Indians might not want this because they like their benefits or are afraid their culture will be lost. It wont though, as long as they choose to keep it alive.

User8911,I agree completely,I think this thread is a good example of why humanity crushes individual cultures and melds them into the present.

The video is evidence of the brutality of nature and the condition of global humanity ,NOT JUST THE OPPRESSORS SINGULAR MISTREATMENT OF THE NATIVE CULTURES.

Cultures and societys are temporary holding spots for different sections of humanity, but because we are all on the same team wether we think so or not, wether it seems so or not and wether it looks so or not---some people cry out loud for a return to the past where they HAD things, things they have to work for today.

It is not possible to dispute the horrible atrocities committed during war, innocent people die cultures are forever changed,no one can deny these things happened,no one can deny that the premises that caused these things to happen remained for generations and continued to negatively affect these peoples,BUT AT THE SAME TIME no one can deny that enough time has passed for these cultures to have had time and opportunity to assimilate THEMSELVES into the culture of the country they live in.

Why dont I hear any one else crying about their sordid history---because they are to busy living in the moment and struggling to keep up with our ever changing global society which we all live in today.

There are no laws today that say you cannot teach ancient languages to your kids, you can teach them latin if you choose,or cherokee---its up to you.

You can bake bannock and hunt deer and bison ,if you follow the rules.

Oh yes,I forgot its really the rules you dont like, the nomadic urges are just to strong for your cultures to accept rules.

There are no laws against being native and the whole tone of this thread is one of uprising and a general incitation of discontent, stirring the pot.Putting videos on the net and reliving terrible times is allowed but it isnt very progressive,we are unlikely to forget what happened because we all carry the scars, and please dont say this isnt so because the people REALLY AFFECTED DIRECTLY ARE ALL DEAD NOW.History carries the scars of what happened. But the issue died with the participants.History.
The laws arent changing and the direction the native cultures are going isnt changing this is called progress.American,Canadian,Austrailian, the country is irrelevant because humanity as a whole has suffered these growing pains together.

Why doesnt anyone ever look at the other side ,the side of progress, every ancient culture has had to navigate the waves of progress.
Your old ancient cultures paid the price or the FARE that allows your people to share our country with the rest of us who conquored you.Sounds like a pretty good deal.My anscesters got the same deal, like everyone elses.

The marshall Plan helped rebuild a conquored culture, the monies and cultural support given to the generation of your forefathers defeated was equal to that, after that generation passed the issue died with them.

No man or woman alive today is required to answer for historys actions,it has already spoken for itself,it cannot be changed.

Last time I checked citizens can vote,so if you reallly care about how cultures like your own former culture were treated ,you will use your constitutional vote to choose an elected representative who will carry forward your intentions of not ever repeating these actions.

I count on the support of all of my fellow countrymen and women to maintain the life my family and I share and I identify people seeking unreasonable and irrational reparations or apologys as a threat to my culture and my country just as my forefathers did.

Maybe history teaches the loser nothing and the victor how to maintain control through assimilation, none of this is my call,or yours.History has spoken, and I do not propogate a future that includes the mistakes of the past.

I dont believe history was wrong,I dont believe that war and violence are the only way forward, but until humanity as a whole decides to change its ways ,I shall continue to support the institutions that keep my family safe and my country intact.

This means I do not share the opinion of some of the posters here,I do not need to call anyone ignorant, history has already decided who was and is ignorant of the reality we all share.

Videos like the one posted are excellent resources for everyone concerned about humanities future,if we can identify the issues and dynamics that hold a culture back and keep them quagmired in alcoholism, drug abuse ,domestic abuse, arms dealing, and a general unwillingness to conform to societal norms as identified by the voting majority of the country concerned, then we can prevent this multi-generational spiral of destruction from being propogated by future cultures on the path today to being assimilated by humanities unrelentless and necessary path and progress.

Thank you OP ,you opened my eyes to what can happen to a culture that gets hung up on revenge and forgets to look forward to the future, and you provided everyone with a great starting point for trying to find a way to help these people get over their losses and help to heal the SPIRITUAL wounds that they seem to carry today, many years and entire generations after the fact.

Looking forward to more informative vids like the one posted,I think we can all help everyone get over this together.

Kaiode1,your accusations of ignorance are no different than an arrow past my head.

I will not respond in kind,we have mods for that.

I however will respond to the ON TOPIC part of your post,I do not condone the violence humans inflict on each other nor DO I APOLOGISE FOR IT,one day you or I may be inflicting just such violence on each other because of the world we live in today.

The atrocities of war are just that atrocities, but when you are involved in a struggle for dominance and you are trying to kill and destroy an invading culture instead of sharing proportionatly as the native cultures resorted to doing, then these things will happen,I do not endorse violence ,I endorse survival through peaceful democratic means,AND BECAUSE WE DONT LIVE IN A UTOPIAN WORLD,we are all faced with these issues of survival,it is part of the human condition.

Dramatic illustration is just that,DRAMA.

I do not hold any grudge agains the people of humanity that came before me because I envision a global society like the one we seem to see developing today,I do not hang on to the past ,or allow past wrongs to stop me from choosing the life I want to live, within the parameters of survival.

If you watch the video the OP posted you might see why I offer no apologies, things arent changing with the approach we have been using in our quest to help these peoples adjust to the changing world.

You see progress was coming wether it was European or Asian or whatever and the results would have been the same, and will continue to be the same until we have a global society.

I surely will not apologise for saying that I am willing to accept the mistakes of the past in return for an opportunity to participate in a better future.

I will not support perspectives that choose to remain in the past ,wether they have scars to hold up and show me or not.
